Earthquake Questions
i live in California, San diego. and the san andreas fault is right here. do u think we will be hit by a massive earthquake sooner or later? with all the destruction going on, its a strong possibility right?

Actually, "brian" above me has a point.
The problem’s not going to be with faultlines like the San Andreas, that go off, in small quakes, over and over. That relieves pressure between the plates and keeps the energy behind a Big One from ever forming. If a Big One hits the U.S. West Coast it will be further north where the pressure gets to build up.
Speaking of which….we have major faultlines or possible epicenters in every major time zone in the U.S., or just offshore (with the East Coast). Honestly, the ones in the middle have me the most worried–it’s been ages since a big one hit the New Madrid fault, and we’re still not ready here in the Mississippi River Valley.
Likewise, with Yosemite. Not a fault-line per se, but more like a geyser system that could be a volcanic system any time. Different physics, same results.
This is what bothers me: That we will have *multiple* quakes up the middle, between the Rockies and the Appalachians, that it will cause Haitian-style destruction and chaos on a scale larger than the land area of the original Louisiana Purchase….and that the world will refuse to help.
That for the first year or so, the *middle* of the nation just won’t get more than trivial help in the wake of a disaster on such a massive, relentless scale. And then, in subsequent years, the nation will be Three Bankrupt Coasts (East, West and Gulf) with a Ruin up the Middle.
That is the vision of the future that bothers the hell out of me. Assuming I even survive this, the last thing I want is to see my nation become *even more* of an occupied, cratered ruin than what it already is. o_o

there’s this theory that if an earthquake big enough will strike in california, it will actually break off the united states & become an island

I too am on this fault line. The sooner it happens the better as far as destruction is concerned. The longer it takes, the worse the quake will be. Maybe we will get lucky and just have several smaller quakes to relieve the pressure on the plates.

If you watch the USGS website they show live time quakes. They constantly occur all over the western us. i live in southern ca, and it looks like from what they say, we could get one , as there are dozens to hundreds of faults here depending on area. but all experts agree, that in the united states the likely areas for a “next big one” would be near palm springs on the southern portion of the san andres, and the northwest from northern ca to washington. but the reality is we can just gather data, and never know until it happens

I can feel it. There’s been more seismic activity than usual and not to be negative but it’s going to happen and soon. Everyone just needs to be prepared, not panic and if in a large arena don’t exit the way you came in, that’s what everyone else will be doing. Good luck
