Where do you go in the event of a Tornado Warning, when you do not have a basement or cellar?

Oh, and you have a huge oak tree over your home. We have had a couple of tornadoes before, but none have ever hit our home. At the present, we are under a tornado watch which will likely turn into a warning soon since a tornado has been spotted 30 miles away. What do you do when you do not have a basement, and there is a chance of a large tree falling on your home in the event of a Tornado?

Go the center of the lowest floor of your house and stay away from windows. Another good place to go is the bathroom and wrap your arms around the bottom of the toilet bowl. Pipes are the strongest part of your house and a tornado can’t do anything with it. If you are in a mobile home or trailer immediately go find a sturdier shelter. If no sturdier shelter is available then go to the nearest ditch or low lying spot and cover your hands with your head instead of staying in the mobile home. Even some of the weakest tornadoes can easy overturn mobile homes and automobiles.

Go to a neighbors or friends? If you can’t leave the house go to a center room without windows such as a bathroom or hallway.

Go to an interior room without windows if possible. If you have a bathtub on the ground floor, lay down in the tub and hold something over top of you (like a mattress or heavy blankets) to help protect you from flying debris.

According to FEMA, "Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows."
