I have designed very simple instruments to measure the magnitude, intensity, direction, distance of earthquakes. I use my lap top to get seismograph picture. A floating magnet available in the direction finder key chain ( compass ) is kept inside a coil of copper insulated wire wound on a plastic tube. Both the ends are connected to the mic terminal of your lap top. Down load some free sound chord oscilloscope soft ware and you will get the graph where you can measure acceleration frequency & arrival time of different waves that is all required for a seismograph.

Seismographs must be located far from human disturbances. In you home, it would only pick up your footsteps and the rumble of traffic.
