Earthquake Questions
I live in Long Beach California, but dont know when "the big one" will come. Supposedly this year theres supposed to be "an earthquake" (according to phycics) not sure wich one though…maybey just a regular one.
And if it does strike Cali, is it true Cali will be under water? Help?

According to whose physics? Because that’s BS. No, it is physically impossible for California to sink anywhere to be underwater.
When I was first old enough to be aware of people talking about "the Big One" was about 1979. From that moment, I’ve been hearing, "The Big One is coming sometime in the next 30 years!!" Every three or four years, they would adjust their prediction, basically, "Okay, well, now starting from *this* 30 years". It’s been 30 years, and there’s been no big one. Personally, because of my observations of the San Andreas Fault Zone, I don’t believe that there will ever be "the Big One." Here in Southern California, we’re constantly letting off seismic steam with daily 1 – 2 magnitude earthquakes – multiple ones every day. Nobody cares, except for the faults, who just slowly release energy. Our biggest are about 6.5 that hit every five years or so. Those are our biggest quakes, the longest buildup of pressure, our largest release of energy – and then the SAFZ goes back to building it up like normal.
Hence, my geologist’s opinion, "No Big One."
Beyond that, no physicists, no geophysicist, or seismologist, or mystical mind reader can predict an earthquake – definitely not within a single year precision. We barely even known how earthquakes work in any detail, and most definitely have no idea how to predict them. Sure, if we could measure strain, and where it was building, that would be good, but we don’t know how to do that.
So don’t worry, anything that you’ve heard is just BS and other expletives.

Don’t worry. You will not get major one in near future because the accumulated energies are released in piece meal then and there. You are safe now.

I heard that it will strike in Los Angeles and wipe out most of California.
I also heard that it might happen in 2012 or in the next 30 years.
Nobody knows when it’s coming for sure.

We may never get one, the center of the earth where the earquakes take place may be settled enough after all these millions of years that it could just be a lot of little ones still settling the inside of the earth, when you think about it, it doesn’t have that much room to move that much.

It will happen in either in april or September 2010 i have a secret power and can predict global catastrophes!!

The little 1.0-2.0 earthquakes don’t release pressure they only move stress from one part of the fault to another. The “Big One” will come, but no one can really be sure. You never know we could have an 8.0 this year or next year or twenty years from now.
The “Big One” will come because the southern tip of the San Andreas fault hasn’t experienced a big earthquake in about three hundred years and geologists predict that Southern California has a major earthquake every three centuries. So there has been much stress building up for the past three hundred years, given some of it has been released by magnitude 5.0+ earthquakes, but the stress just keeps building. Eventually us Californians will have an earthquake, a “Big One.” Geologists predict that the San Andreas fault is capable of producing a 7.8 quake or higher and thats devastating.
The only thing you can do is be prepared and just wait.
