1. The best bet is to stay away from windows and outside walls.
2. The old adage of opening the windows during a tornado to prevent a house explosion by the changes of air pressure generated by a tornado is not guaranteed. So most people say now to keep the windows closed.
3. If you cannot stay away from windows or outside walls, at least go to a bathtub, cover yourself with something pretty heavy to protect yourself from flying debris if the bathroom window shatters in very high winds. You must cover yourself because the shards of glass could go as high as 300 mph….and if it hits you….it can lead to serious injury or even death.
4. Take your battery-operated radio with you. Best radios have a NOAA radio frequency where you can hear the latest on tornado warnings/watches in your area; some of these radios are equipped with sirens that flash or make a sound when a tornado warning is emmiment.
5. Your city or town often sets off sirens around the first Tuesday around 10am of every month. This is a safety precaution even when the sky is not perfect for tornadoes…these tests are for your sake…you hear the siren when the skies are threatening…you take shelter immediately!
6. You will often hear the sound of a freight train before the twister approaches.
7. Do not get up after covering yourself for a tornado until the tornado warning in your area has passed or has expired. If you are impatient and get up too early, you still risk being hit by flying debris or the twister itself.
8. Underground storm shelters are best, especially in rural areas. They are often visualized with a trap door entrance, and when the tornado approaches, you go inside the shelter, and you slide the locking mechanism that keeps most of the tornadic winds outside, but often this will not completely protect you from the most dangerous tornado…the EF5 tornado….the worst tornado you can ever experience.
Hope it all helps.

When a tornado warning is issued seek shelter immediately in a strong building and go to the basement. If no basement is available go to a small interior room and put as many wall between you and the outside as possible. if caught out side lay flat in a ditch and never seek shelter under an overpass.
when a tornado warning is issued based on doppler radar it means that strong rotation has been detected in a thunderstorm a tornado may be developing or maybe already on the ground.
and that thing where ur suppose to open ur window to equalize the pressure. don’t! once it is issued seek shelter now.

hunker down in a basement without near windows or in a bathtub without any near windows

Stay away from windows and keep an eye on the sky for immediately changing weather conditions.

If you have a basement, that’s the best place to be. If not, go in an enclosed space away from windows like a bathroom or a closet. If you’re outside, lie in a ditch and NEVER attempt to outrun the tornado. If you’re area is prone to tornadoes, you should purchase a weather radio so it could wake you up when watches and warnings are issued so you can get to safety. Also, you should take the weather radio with you so you can stay updated throughout the storm.
