The San Andreas Fault is a combination pressure and motion as tectonic plates are moving slowly in different directions. The two plates are slipping roughly 35mm per year and create a notable fault line that runs from Baja California to just north of San Francisco. This movement along the fault line is responsible for the earthquakes that are felt periodically along the coast of California and Mexico and is largely based on the high activity of the Pacific Plate.

This fault line is part of a greater geographical phenomenon known as "The Ring of Fire" or the Circum-Pacific Belt ; which is a geologically active area around the Pacific Plate. The "Ring of Fire" is credited with the high volume of of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements surrounding the Pacific Plate, where it collides and pulls away from the other plates.
