Earthquake Questions
I really need to understand this:
What is the magnitude of an earthquake that is 3.7 times as strong as another earthquake that measures 5.2 on the Richter scale?
Thanks in advance!

Each number of magnitude of an earthquake is 10 times stronger than the previous number. Therefore, the measure of the earthquake 3.7 times as strong as a 5.2 earthquake would be 5.2 + (3.7/10), which would be a 5.57 (or 5.6)

Richter scale is derived from the energy released during earthquake at the point of focus. It is not directlyconnected with real damage.
See the chart for energy release.
Approximate TNT (Tri nitro telecom ) Yield for Seismic Energy
Richter scale
1 30 lbs
2. 1 ton
3.29 ton
4.1000 ton
5.32000 ton
6.1 million ton
7.32 million ton
8.1 billion ton
9.32 billion ton
101 trillion ton.
