From the pictures that I have seen, it seems that Haiti is more devastated than Chile yet it has a lesser magnitude

the haiti quake was closer to the earth’s crust for one, also look how far away the worst hit cities were

Chile has a better infrastructure and the buildings have to be built to code unlike Haiti.

The difference is the measured wavelength and the intensity.

Chile uses cement in their buildings and roads (real cement) Haiti didn’t…
sad but true

Chile has better building codes. They built strong buildings designed to withstand Earthquakes.
Unfortunately Haiti is dirt poor, and just threw up cardboard buildings in shantytowns with no hope of surviving Earthquakes. Sad but true. Think of the little pig who built his house of straw and the pig that built his house of bricks.

The difference is that Haiti was 7.0 and Chile was 8.8 which is something like 900 times stronger. But you can’t compare the strength of the buildings of both countries.

Chile is richer than Haiti, and its buildings are built to a better standard.
