What are the factors that determine the time that elapses between an earthquake and it’s discovery by seismometers, and how do these factors influence the travel time?

The variation in underground material; rock, oil, salt, minerals etc. can change the time that an earthquake takes to transmit to the seismometers. That why oil drilling companies use this method in their hunt for oil. The either set off small explosions or they use a truck that has a heavy plate which can stamp the ground.
