What are the advantages and disadvantages from using a mercalli scale and a richter scale?

Richter scale gives you the amount of energy released by earthquakes. It is same for an earthquake when it is measured from any distance. We need seismograph to find the value .But the mercalli scale is more meaning full .Unfortunately it is not used in general practice. It shows you the intensity sensed by the people of that local area. There should not be comparison between these two scales. One is for energy release other one is for its effect ( intensity). The Richter scale is open ended scale no upper limit for it. But the maximum recorded after the invention of Richter scale is 9.5 next to the one attacked on 26th Dec 2004 at 9.3. Mercalli scale starts from 1 to 12. At 12 almost all the articles will fly and thrown away. Please see my slide show or contact me back to know more on these subjects.
