Tornado heading here: When should I decide to head for the basement?

Tornado warning is for midnight
We are getting a Tornado warning for New York. I live in Jamaica, Queens. I see thunderstorms coming. My children are seeing television and I am on the computer. How does it struck, all of a sudden or it sends winds as warning then we have time to run to the basement.
Depending who is closer will get hit first.
The tornado turned and all we had was a thunderstorm warning and floods. Thanks!

you’ll know if a toronado is there… it sounds like a train. if you hear a train and stuff crashing around outside then yeah run to the basement. usually the TV will tell you if an actual toronado has touched the ground and they’ll tell you exactly where it is

You will have little to no warning at best, so I advise that you take shelter as fast as you can. You may hear a sucking sound and feel the air pressure drop, but sometimes it comes within seconds of hearing the tornado. Get into the lowest level of the building, or better yet, the basement. Get into a sturdy, interior room without window. Cover yourself with a mattress, table, or something sturdy as you put your hands over your head and back of your neck. Have your children do the same. This will protect you and your children from falling debris. I live in Tornado Alley so I know the drill; ACT FAST!
