The connection between celebrities and us?
What is the strong connection between celebrities and us?
I mean, every single time some celebrity does something absurd or something happens to them why do we react like they’re our close friends?
I dont mean disrespect but lets look at the latest headlines:
John Travolta’s son has died…R.I.P
but why why is it that its all over CNN under BREAKING NEWS and all over the world people are crying for him?
Whereas when 800 people die in China from an earthquake or 500 people die from a ferry accident, no one seems to care too much.
Arent they both human and shouldnt they both be treated the same?
Whats this strong connection?

ugh.. i have no idea..
idol-ism maybe..
i completely agree.
i am not gonna lie.. i did see that thing about Travolta’s son.. and i was like..aww that’s so sad..
but in turn…when i see a pic of a starving child…i will feel the same way..
in fact!.. i seen this video about darfur and i freakin’ cried..!
i try to treat everyone equally… and i don’t look up to movie stars..
i think it’s the media just shoves that kind of stuff in our faces more..
gosh i don’t even want to get started on this.
it’s americas way.. all we care about is ourselves…

That’s a good point, and I strongly agree with you.

we don’t know them, but we do in a way.
so when something bad happens to them, it affects us too.
we’re their fans.

I agree. Also, earthquakes and other accidents are one thing, but why is it that so few people seem to care about bigger issues like genocide?

a singular death is more acutely felt than multiple deaths.. O sort of built in emotional protection.. The mind perceives a foreign death as remote, far way…. unreal in a way .

i don’t know, but that is truly sad about his son.
I think mainly its just to feed our brains information. The news doesn’t want to have happy things to report about, so they find other sad things in people’s lives to report about. But we do hear about other random people’s sons dying. Its all the same really, just one is famous and one is not. You see?

I agree. It’s the sad truth.

It should matter but when a celebrity or their family member dies its more intimate. It’s like you’ve seen their movies and they made u laugh and they made you cry they had an effect on you and you connect withthem. On the news they just spit facts at you so I think you don’t feel their pain because you don’t make a personal connection.

YES I AGREE WITH YOU 2043503653%!!!
I seriously couldn’t agree more! yea, his son died, that’s sad, but that happens to lots of people too! plus other people have had more horrific incedents. why aren’t they on CNN. and i don’t get why CNN puts stuff about celebs on tv. that’s mtv’s job…
here in canada, CNN’s equivelent is CBC. they don’t play anything related to celebs, they play REAL news, why can’t CNN?

It has to do with a sort of service and how many times you’ve been exposed (in a good way) to them. The actors have given of themselves (well, they’ve been paid well to do it) on a repeated basis to generate an emotional response in us when we watch them, and if we’ve seen them in several movies or shows, they start to feel like friends, so when something happens to them, it feels like it happened to a friend. Plus, you never know if you really could be related to a celebrity, because if you go back 200 or 300 years , maybe 400 years at the most, our ancestors were pretty much close to all being cousins, so you’re bound to be related to someone.
