As you may or may not have heard, a devastating 8.8 earthquake struck Chile earlier this evening, and our USGS Immediately issued warnings in Chile and the surrounding regions about the likelihood of a tsunami.

Much like Haiti, you can be sure that Chile will require an outpouring of international help to rebuild from this catastrophe. My question is, where should that help come from? Should it continue to come from the United States, given how many other resource draining situations we are already involved in? Should we provide intelligence and effort coordination, helping other aid and what not get where it needs to go, or should we do something like send money and food and stay the Hell out of the way?

I’ve been looking at USGS and there are so many earthquakes everywhere,is it normal to have this many?

The USGS needs to revise their formulas. 500 times greater would have sunk South America.
I realize how the calculations are done. It’s the theory that’s screwed up. Don’t tell the Haitians their’s wasn’t worse, energy theory or not.

(CNN) — An early morning earthquake rattled northern Illinois on Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was originally reported as having a magnitude of 4.3, but the USGS later downgraded it to magnitude 3.8. It hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground. The USGS pinpointed the quake between the towns of Virgil and Sycamore, Illinois.http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/10/illinois.earthquake/index.html?section=cnn_latest

I get notices of all earthquakes over a 2.5 (Richter) there seems to be way to many small ones called clusters. In one area of CA where my sister lives there were 99 from 1.1 to 4.4 in one week. There are also quakes happening in areas that are normally very quiet. Yellowstone National Park, CA is dancing all over the place north, central and southern, Mexico is getting in on the action too as well as there being quakes all over the world. Today there was a 4.1 almost on the border of New Mexico and Colorado. That’s an odd one. We had a couple small ones here in Texas. I’m beginning to wonder what is going on, if it walks like a duck! Anyone interested [email protected] will get you all the info. on the US as well as the world.
Since I posted this questipn there has been a 5.1 in Greese, 5.7 Santa Cruz Islands, a 5.5 in Argentina and a 6. in Guatamala. Plus many small ones. What do you say ot a 4.0 in New Mexico.
Your right about CA but I’m talking about not just the ones in CA, I’m talking about Yellowstone Park, and other places. I do hope your right that all these little ones is releasing pressure and not putting more pressure on the faults, because if it’s adding pressure we’re (the world) going to be in trouble.

GUATEMALA CITY – A strong earthquake has rocked Guatemala and parts of El Salvador, but no there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in either country.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0.

The USGS says it hit Monday morning about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Guatemala City, where it was felt by many residents. There were reports of shaking in the Guatemalan countryside and in El Salvador as well.

Civil protection officials in the two countries says so far there are no reports of injuries or damage, but authorities are still checking.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100118/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_guatemala_earthquake_2

I live in Washington state, and receive notifications from the USGS about earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest area. There have been a series of quakes off the Oregon coast over the past 10 days or so – the largest was a 5.2. I’m not a geologist by any stretch of the imagination, but I was watching the news last night, and a short piece on the quakes mentioned that this kind of series of quakes is usually associated with volcanic eruptions. Of course, right now, there IS no volcano in that region; is it possible that we’re about to see a new one begin? I’d be curious to know what people educated in this sort of science think – thanks!
Btw – I’m not "worried" about it or anything; I’m just wondering if it’s POSSIBLE. I certainly think it would be fascinating to see if it occurs, but I have no idea if that’s possible. I do remember MANY years ago (I’m 53) the process of a volcano (in the Atlantic, I think) turning into an island; it was documented in something like Life or National Geographic, but I was much too young at the time to do much more than look at the pictures.

Ok – yeah, I know about the Cascade volcanoes, of course (I can look out my window and see Rainier, after all…). I guess it’s just that the USGS folks are saying there’s no volcano in the immediate area of the quakes, so I’m wondering if it’s reasonable at all to think that another one MIGHT form. Of course, I know it would take an EXTREMELY long time to form to the size of a Rainier or a St. Helens, but *could* this be the start of a new one?
