Ever since the Easter earthquake, I have been really tense and paranoid. I know the "big one" is bound to happen sometime….. and I also know that you can’t predict earthquakes… but I’m sure scientists have made estimates of when it will strike. And if it strikes LA, how badly will it affect San Diego? And will this "big one" cause a tsunami?

I stood on top of the mountain surveying the wreckage of this latest disaster. For the last year, every town had suffered horrendous damages, and I don’t know how anyone survived. Tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanoes erupting destroyed civilisation as we all knew it, and for all I knew, on that fateful day I could have been the last survivor. The last man standing as it were, but I didn’t feel like celebrating- why would I, in this lonely world?

I walked over to the old lodge, one of the only buildings left, and sat down inside, opening one of the cupboards. Five cans of beans, expiration date- five months ago. A loaf of bread, stale and rotting, lying discarded next to a bar of chocolate. Smiling in relief that I wasn’t quite out of food just yet, that I might survive, I opened the can of beans and ate it quickly, leaving everything else lying there.

Staring out at the room around me I groaned, trying not to remember my life before all of this horror. Hearing a crash behind me, I ran out of the lodge onto the snowy mountain. A man was standing opposite me, glaring at me with cold eyes.
“Are you… Kathy?” he asked, hesitant.
“Yes!” I said, feeling ecstatic.
“I have something to ask you, a favour”
I narrowed my eyes. “If you’re asking for food, then you’re not getting any. I’ve got to look after myself-“
He laughed. “No, no, I don’t need food. I’ve got enough of that. I know a way that this all could have been stopped. Don’t you want to hear what it is?”
“No! It’s too late for scientists to save anybody- even if there was anybody left to save”

The man remained quiet for a moment then shook his head.
“If you could go back and save them, would you, whatever the cost?”
“Of course I would” I snapped.
“Say it, say you would, whatever the cost, say those words!” he urged, and ignoring how stupid he sounded, at his insistence I whispered the words.
His eyes glowed red and he smirked.
“You shall get your wish”.

The world seemed to spin, into a rainbow of different colours, and then I was falling through the air. When that sickening sensation stopped, I was lying on grass. Real grass; that I thought had all been destroyed! Not concrete, or mud, or the wooden floorboards of the lodge. Sitting up quickly, I saw a bricked building, with large glass windows, showing food inside. Confused and disorientated, I looked up – it seemed to be a supermarket. But how was that possible? That would mean that… someone… someone had survived -a whole town maybe! And how was I here?

Staggering inside, I picked up a newspaper and glanced at the date, displayed firmly at the top of the page. February 1st 2010. I nearly fainted, realising that I had been catapulted back in time, to the day before the disaster, knowing everything that would happen. Smiling despite myself, I knew that I had the chance to save some of my family – anyone, to make a difference to the horrors that would soon suffocate this place.

Running back outside, I found my way back to the place that had been my best friend’s home, and stood outside the door, staring through the window to see both of our families sitting round the table. Ecstatic I open the door and run inside, forgetting what I knew of the future.
“You ok?” Ed,my friend, says and I stand there frozen, remembering what would soon happen.
"Sorry, are you…" I swallowed nervously, staring at the TV, which was displaying news of an earthquake somewhere in the world.
"What? You sound… confused. And have you seen what you’re wearing?"
I glanced down at the torn, oversized clothes I had stolen from one of the rooms in the lodge. I narrowed my eyes, knowing that I must save them – my family and Ed’s.

Sprinting into the next room, I found a wallet lying on the mantelpiece and turned to Ed.
"What are you doing with that?" he said sternly.
"Look, it’s for your own good" I snapped.
"How’s stealing 500 quid of my family’s money for my own good?"
"You’ll see" I said darkly, trying not to cry.

aside from seismometers and seismographs, is there any new technology helping scientists predict volcanic eruptions?

Seismogram’s record the forces of earthquakes. How do these seismogram’s help scientists learn about the composition of the Earth?

Are perhaps the greatest thinkers those who question the nature of Reality?
Since the human brain does not record all of the sensory input coming to it, should not scientists wonder if our five senses are to be completely trusted? Now that we have many scientific instruments that reveal things that the brain misses, from microscopes to infrared sensors to seismographs to radios, showing us so many things beyond our ability to sense, should we wonder if Reality itself is so solid and real as we thought?
After all, we are just mostly space at an atomic level, whirling electrons, and we don’t actually have a solid reality except as a convention of thought.
What do you think?

Go to wikipedia and look up the LHC atom splitter the one that physicists are testing out and playing God with note some of the recent uses and the couple of day later earthquakes…

i think its the "butterfly effect"

who else thinks scientists shouldnt be putting other peoples lives in their hands with something on such a catastrophical level??

Also I’d like to mention that there are that many quakes EVERY year, there are just more people each year so we live where there are quakes.

END OF THE WORLD, RIGHT?!
Lorraine: Scientists have DETECTED more earthquakes than ever. Because they have more seismographs than in 1920. Because they’re LOOKING for more.

pease please please!! im so confused–how do they monitor mount pinatubo?
what tools or things do scientists use to warn them about more volcanic eruptions and earthquakes? specifically on mount pinatubo?

Yellowstone is the site of one of the worlds 7 Super volcano’s, the last time it erupted was 70,000 years ago. Could this be leading up to another super eruption that could devastate the whole country? Scientists say this many earthquakes in so few of days is not normal. What do you think of all this, if yellowstone erupts we are all pretty much done for!

Why would securing gas appliances help make you home more earthquake safe?

Who were scientists able to use seismic information to develop a model of Earth’s interior?

For those who’ve heard about the latest earthquakes at Yellowstone…

who else is freaking out that the super volcano is going to erupt at any time?

I’ve been having nightmares. It’s 3am and I can’t get to sleep, I’m actually shaking. Anyone else know about this? Is a super volcano eminent?
I feel really silly about being scared, but a friend told me it was going to happen like in the next few months, and I read online that a super volcano explosion would mean the end of the world basically. I’m really scared. i’m only 15. I don’t want the world to end yet. I’m not even allowed to date till I turn 16 in July
thanks to the three answers. i feel a little better. And it seems the activity has slowed down, and possibly stopped.

Scientists dont’ seem all that concerned, and neither does my dad. he’s the smartest guy in the world IMO. (sometimes. LOL) and my mom tells me kids my age shouldn’t worry about such deep issues.

I guess i’ll try to relax. i don’t know which answer to pick as best, so I’ll leave it up to a vote unless there’s a tie.

thanks again.

Scientists drill deep into the earth for samples. It’s pretty obvious that the earth isn’t THAT stable because there has been a recent increase in volcanic activity and earthquakes (all the activity around the Pacific Rim). With all the drilling going on, I can’t imagine that it doesn’t affect the Earth’s stability. I realize it’s a catch 22 (cuz they are likely looking for clues so they can predict these events), but we’re screwing with nature and it will likely bite us in the @$$.
When drilling occurs, whatever is in it’s way is moved, removed, broken, etc. which can cause things to shift. Also, I read that most earthquakes occur 50 miles below the earth’s surface–which is relatively close compared to some of the answers provided below.

Scientists and uninformed citzens have been predicting the big one since the beginning of time. Everytime we do have a major earthquake (we never do) they still claim its not the big one. Its all bs. California earthquakes are nothing in comparison to the damage sustained from hurricanes and tornados.

There have been numerous earthquakes that have been documented in the past week at yellowstone. Is this a precursor to something worse? Could this be the super volcano eruption that scientists have spoke of in the past? And how come the newspapers and media have not been picking this story up?

I have to write an essay on this, and it is not fully covered in my book. I do know that S-waves only travel through solids, while P-waves can travel through both.
I have to include information about how scientists know about three of Earth’s interior features because of seismic evidence.

I know this is a new science but some scientists have predicted earthquakes and volcanie erruptions by using the moon cycles.

It seems that there have been a multitude of earthquakes lately since the Tsunami. Scientists say that a huge one should happen soon near Nevada as the pressure is building up. Now there's a big one in China along with others in the news in the past year or so. Do you think there has been a lot more than average and what does this mean?
I am wondering if the number of recent earthquakes is indicating some huge plate shift where maybe a new continent will be formed or something really huge like that.
