Could you please critique this essay for history? It is about interviewing somebody about a world event.

Even though it only lasted 10 to 15 seconds, this event killed 63 people, injured 3,757 many people homeless, and an estimated six billion in damages. So when I told my dad about the project he immediately chose the date October 17th, 1989, for the Universal Essay where he talked about the 7.0 magnitude Loma Prieta.
On that day, October 17th, 1989, my dad wasn’t doing anything interesting like most people; he was just taking a nap. At a friend’s appartment in San Jose, he was sleeping on the couch like I would expect him to do today. At twenty-five years old, he was new to California and didn’t except many surprises, so he was in for a surprise. At 5:04 my dad woke up, to the breaking of a glass, and looking out the window he saw the tree’s shaking vigorously, and the walls of the apartment jolting. He remembers staring at a glass vase when it fell and broke. It dawned on him that it was an earthquake, and he looked for cover. In panic he said, he dove under the couch however it would only fit his head.
After the earthquake was over, his friend came back to see if he was okay, and his head was stuck underneath the sofa. So after he got out, he saw that a lot of things broken like, the glass that fell to the floor that woke him up. He then remembers rushing outside and seeing everybody out, some with scrapes and bruises, but overall it was okay. There were lots of helpful people the time after that, handing out food, and water. Everyone was so nice, talking to strangers, and helping one another out. Mostly he forgot because he was drossy from the nap.
I think my dad was a fair source of information because he did tell me what he was doing, and the event in a picture that I could understand. He told me somewhat of what the room looked like, and understood the event he did by telling me details of the details of the quake. The thing that didn’t make him an excellent source was because he was sleeping until the event, so he wasn’t fully conscious while witnessing it. My first reaction to my dad’s story was laughter, because I couldn’t imagine him getting stuck under a sofa, panicking, or as a twenty-five year old. But after I got over that fact, and saw how many people died, it was very sad, however he went on about how everybody was so kind after, it was very uplifting to know that the people were so unselfish. Even though this event was still a tragedy, the Loma Prieta earthquake can also be seen as a heartwarming story where not only thousands of Californians worked and helped together in a disaster, but the rest of the United States watching and aiding them.

THANKS :D
Hailei

Are they sure that the ‘Big Quake’ is going to happen this year or is it just a guest?

Because they’re doing more preparation in schools this year but did not prepare at all last year.

I am under the impression that many little earthquakes…2.2 here…a couple months later a 2.6..a couple months later a 4.1…for example means pressure is being relieved. But could it also mean a much larger quake is coming?
COME ON??? No one has a clue?

Do you believe in God?

Can you prove that God was responsible for this disaster?

———————–

God hasn’t caused the earth ozone layer to shrink, or the atmosphere to become polluted, or the trees to be destroyed. Do you know who is responsible for all the earth disasters.

Even some Catholic Cardinals say "its an act of God" To illustrate: While visiting San Pedro Sacatepéquez the Friday after the quake a man pawing through the remains of his home dejectedly told me: “This is punishment from God, because we have been very bad people.”
Where, you may wonder, did he and many others of these humble hardworking people get such an idea? The next day it became apparent. The Catholic Cardinal of Guatemala, Mario Casariego, said, as quoted in the country’s principal newspaper:
“In these moments of great calamities to the people, the teaching of the Holy Scriptures comes to mind: God loves and because he loves, he corrects, sets straight and awakens. . . . Haven’t we resisted so much that we have obligated God to work in this way?” Then he added that helping to rebuild the Cathedral and other destroyed churches would “be the symbol of an authentic and personal return to God.”—El Imparcial, February 7, 1976, page 6.

What does your gut sense tell you: Will the next very destructive quake devastate Los Angeles or San Francisco? I have lived in both cities and wonder how either metropolis would deal with the vast disruption that a quake of magnitude 7 or higher would produce. I have a strong sense that this event is on the near horizon and I would like other people’s opinion.

I am doing a project fo science. I have to find 10 recent earthquakes with a magnitude greater than5.0 on the Richter scale. Then I have to compile my fidings in a table that includes the epicenter and the magnitude of the quake, the damage it caused, and any other interesting information about the quake. Please help me find earthquakes and a place to make a table.

I had been a little skeptical about that until the late 1980′s. I live in the midwest where we have some quakes, the New Madrid Fault. I lived next to a house where there was a dog and I had an 8 week old puppy.
3 minutes or so before the 4.5 or so quake, the other dog, a hound, started to howl, and I thought it was sick (it was old) and my puppy literally jumped up in my arms. I thought she was reacting to the other dog’s howling. Just then I felt something and heard a roar, like a loud engine or something, but did not really realize it was a quake at first. I went inside a minute later and my Mom said, "Did you feel the earthquake"? A minute later radio and tv were talking about the quake. This was in St. Louis in 1987 or 1988. It was probably less than a 5 on the Richter scale. But the dogs reacted a full minute-3 minutes ahead of time.

for science we needed to answer these questions… can any one help? our science teacher gave us this site to work with: quake.wr.usgs.gov/study/

For CA- how many [earthquakes] in the last hour?
how many in the last day?
what is the magnitude of the largest?

what is the location and magnitude of the quake nearest to us on the US map? where in the US are there the most earthquakes? the least? what dates are covered for this listing?

How many earthquakes occurred on the most recent month (8-30 days)?
Where in the world are most of the earthquakes located?

For significant quakes give the following:
highest magnitude- number, location
deepest focus location (in earth)- how deep?
closest to surface
caused the most damage

Belleville, IL 10:19 a.m., CST

Did everybody feel this last aftershock? 5 hours after the first quake and we just had another small aftershock come through.. This one was smaller though and shorter… I hope this is the end of this stuff!!!

My mom was talking to her friend in Indiana and her friend screamed and asked her if she felt it, 6 seconds later the wave had reached us in Illinois…
Son’s dad is a Dr. off of Ballas in St. Louis – says he didn’t feel it at his office… he says he was up (Wildwood, MO) for the first one but didn’t feel it either… he must be brain dead….

Has anyone been following up on it lately? There has been about a good 100 to 200 or so, most small. Here’s a list:

http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Maps/115-33_eqs.htm

Its in a geothermal area near a dormant volcano. Its getting annoying aside from nerve racking trying to sleep at night.
Here’s a recent report of earthquakes, man they just keep coming, gah, I hope its just easing pressure off of San Andreas.

Ok so can anybody give me some information on earthquakes? I’m studying abroad this year in Italy around 40 miles from where the big earthquake was the other day. Anyway what I’m wondering is if anybody knows if it’s normal that keep having big shakes. Some are being classes as aftershocks obviously but we’ve had 3 more above 5.0 on the Richter scale, with the last being only around 20mins ago. Is this normal? And if so and it is just the settling of the ground how long can we expect major shakes for? I’m really scared! these apartment blocks swaying like they are all the time is really frightening, I can’t sleep and I live on the 5th floor so it feels really dangerous up here. I’ve just found out that the last quake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale and like i say this was only a short while ago, what can I do to make myself feel better?!
If you want to look at these links you may be able to tell me more about if it’s really abnormal or not, I know the news here has been calling the situation an anomaly?
If it helps this link shows all the recent quakes apart from the last

http://www.earthquake.it/ultimi-terremoti.php

and this shows the biggest ones, including the last one

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/region/Europe.php

Thanks the geologist that’s helpful. Well as I live on the 5th floor I’m not thinking about exit strategies because I heard you shouldn’t go into the internal stairwell. This may sound stupid but I thought I may put a mattress on top of my bathtub with a couple of bottles of water etc inside then if I feel another one get in under the mattress. Is this a really stupid idea or not?

what’s so unstable in that area?… is that a prime subduction zone, or is there volcanic activity to come or was in the past ?…. this is a couple doozies to have happened so near each other in a short time, yes?…. here’s the USGS site’s report..

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/eqinthenews/2007/us2007hear/

. and this quake was only five miles deep?.. isn’t that pretty shallow?….
on page two, I just learned about the Toba volcano on Sumatra…. looks like it could be deep doo-doo over there if these quakes wake that booger up…..any chance of that , ya think?….

And by bigger I mean stronger earthquakes, or volcano eruptions from active volcanos. Along the San Andreas fault line, could this mean a bigger quake?

I was watching Fox news and it said that there were 25 (or some number like that) earthquakes in California in the past two months.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/

Recent earthquakes

By the way, I haven’t been keeping track to earthquakes as much as I used to..I was unsure if all of the quakes in Cali were common or not (like if this sort of thing happens all the time).

really in norco there was an aftershock? someof my family said they felt one too, but over here nothing. but im glad ! after shocks make me more uneasy cuz now its like your expecting another earthquake
wow and im liek 5 min away form norco in corona ahah

What a bizarre day! I had a dream lastnight about an earthquake and I ran outside— the earth was cracking under my feet. This morning there a was small earthquake centered near St. Louis. The time of the quake was around 6:30 am. I live just outside of St. Louis on the Illinois side and my room was rattling and my clock said 4:36 am. I know it wasn’t part of my dream because I got up and came out to my computer and watched TV for a bit before trying to get back to bed. Is it possible there was one before the 6:30 am quake that didn’t register on the USGS site? I filled out one of those online forms around 4:45am, but apparently no one else felt it? And also do earthquakes make a "boom" sound, because everyone keeps reporting this sound. Sounds more like some sort of underground blast to me….. Am I nuts?

I live in South Central Pennsylvania, a place where earthquakes are definitely uncommon. In the past 2 or 3 weeks, my town has experienced a number of small tremors (no more than 2 or 3 on the Richter scale). Some people have actually felt these tremors, but many more have heard these "occult bangs," as our local paper put it. The most recent one sounded to me like a very low, very large jet about to hit our house; the sound didn’t build up and then fade away as usual when a jet flies over (even military jets). It was just a very sudden loud noise that lasted a few seconds and then suddenly stopped. This was about 4:30 AM, so low-flying jets aren’t common then anyway. Apparently some people have heard these noises without any tremors having been measured by the USGS.
My question is, what exactly are these earthquake booms? What causes them? Do they mean that we *may*have a larger quake in the future?
The gas companies have already checked the natural gas lines in the area, and the emergency crews have checked into whether there was any kind of blasting in the area during these times. All checks out okay. :)

If an 8.0 hit San Fran now, what damage would be done to all aspects of life? I tried looking at info from USGS and other sites but most info just recaps the 1906 quake. It would be awesome if someone pointed me in the right direction to some sources

I had dream this morning that I was with my sister/brother and suddenly there was downfall of earth similar like earthquake and then I started running on hill higher and higher. Suddenly I realized that I forget to save my sis/bro so I ran down again to look for them. Same time there was earthquake going on, houses was collapsing, people are running and I was searching and searching. There was lots of people around whom I do not know at all. finally my sister called me on phone and she was crying and I too started crying. I was praying that she is alive and I was crying too. Later there was something more but I do not remember. Hope to hear answer soon.
Yes I do have ome personal problem going on which I am quite concern about. In dream the quake was going on but i was not injred or my family too did not had any injury. It was just my sis was calling over phone and I was crying.

There is just some things that are not sitting right with me about all this earthquake stuff. Last week’s earthquake was very strange and there were some strange things that I noticed after the quake. A lot of low flying military-type airplanes, aftershocks that are downgraded minutes after they happen. There was a report of someone from Scott Airforce Base found dead in his home after a "Standoff" the night of the quake, but it was never reported in the news until 4 days later? I’ve noticed a lot of mini-quakes along the New Madrid fault line, where normally there is just a couple a week that show up on the map. Then there’s the Reno quakes….. don’t even get me started on that (Area 51)….. Does anyone else share my feeling that there is something more to these quakes? Tell me your thoughts…. Even if you think I’m a crackpot!

As well as the Major Quake in Indonesia and the one that hit Mexico ALL in one week…
What is going to take for people to understand that being an OStrich is not going to make this world better….Maybe I sound like the Doomsday preacher, but actually I truly want everyone to get thier heart right with GOD and realize MAN cannot control everything in life and the bigger picture is GOD and having people depend on him not Man for a better world, a world we will all be laughing never arguing and debating on the Yahoo R&S Site again…
Won’t that make you happy?

i like in a area that is prone to Earthquakes. i have a horrid fear of them. my Bf says its stupid, and i should get over it. but i’m a diffrent person in a quake. i don’t think at all.
i know every thing about Earthquakes, tilde waves. Tornados. but still i fear the movement. one thing i could blame it on. is when i was young, and we had an EarthQuake. Mom could yell. "Get out of the House Now!!" and somehow that got inprinted into me

The large area of high hazard in the valley east of San Fernando is due to the large, northward dipping thrust fault that was the source of the 1971 quake. Why is the region of hazard here broader than the region around the San Andreas fault near Palmdale?
