I live in Missouri pretty much right on this fault line. I was wondering if you know about any new predictions regarding this fault line. Is a quake way over due? Do they have an estimated time on when we should get a quake? Where can I go to find this information? Thank you.

A few days after the big quake in Chile, people are starting to loot. They have not eaten for days. Banks are closed and couldn’t operate even if they were open, so there is no money available to buy things. If people are starving, is it permitted to just take the things you need to survive? Does the law allow that, or are you just supposed to go off and die? Is there any provision in the law for allowing people to do what they must to survive a disaster, or are we required to meekly starve to death?

Please explain.

Include:the mechanics of quake creation within the tectonics system – thus you would discuss seafloor spreading, plate subduction, faulting, magma movement and bedrock.

A recent post on a global-warming website specifically aimed at youngsters implicitly blames man-made global warming for the Haiti earthquake.

In an article titled – with breathtaking insensitivity – ""What the Haiti Quake Means for the Climate Movement"" (because that’s the main concern here, right?) it says "as the planet heats up, disasters are becoming more frequent and severe" and that Haiti is just the latest example of this.

Although it hedges by stating that ""it is inherently difficult to map changes in the Earth’s climate to any specific event"", it leaves the young reader in no doubt as to the underlying cause, saying ""every time a natural disaster hits, I think about fossil fuels"" and that ""what we know is that burning fossil fuels is altering the climate, increasing the likelihood that disasters like this one will occur.""

It’s only a short article. Have a read and see what you think. Lowest of the low? Are there *any* depths to which they won’t stoop?

If this is true that Puente hills fault is supposed to make a 7.3 Landers Size quake from the San Gabriel Valley to Downtown LA. How come this isn’t well known in the US Mainstream Media like Hayward, New Madrid, San Andreas, Denali, Alaska Subduction, Denali, and the Cascadia are. Besides that LA and the rest of CA have so many Earthquake faults to investigate with.

(CNN) — An early morning earthquake rattled northern Illinois on Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was originally reported as having a magnitude of 4.3, but the USGS later downgraded it to magnitude 3.8. It hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground. The USGS pinpointed the quake between the towns of Virgil and Sycamore, Illinois.http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/10/illinois.earthquake/index.html?section=cnn_latest

well, im 15, and recently undergoing a change of lifestyle.
basically im trying to make myself a better person.
anyway, lately the only thing ive been really thinking about is death and natural disasters.

today wasnt a major quake for my city, atleast in my house it was as if 10 heavy truckes rolled by.
anyway, we’re somewhat close to L.A and would like to know how bad earthquakes would affect us?

all i can do now, is pray.

As we look at the tragedy in Haiti….
As we listen to report after report of aid being sent in by air, sea, and land…
As we pray for the innocent lives to recover from this sad event…..
… is anyone else noticing the pictures of the palaces of the "elite" and the absolute squalor of the "average person"?

The US has sent over a BILLION dollars to Haiti over the last decade. MILLIONS more pour in every month. Now a FORTUNE of money and aid is flowing in during the aftermath of the quake.

WHY???

Isn’t it obvious that the war lords and the powerful elite are KEEPING the money and not helping their own people? Haiti is RIPE with violence and corruption. I think the combined financial loss of this earthquake was around 0 bucks!

Haiti is an outhouse! If we’re going to send aid (today and in the future) – shouldn’t we have some OVER SIGHT as to where the money is going?

Clearly, the UN is incapable of handling ANYTHING, so maybe we should just close our wallets until the people of Haiti make a change for themselves. Thoughts?

Back in 1994, The Northridge, California earthquake struck. Then a year later, on the same date, Kobe, Japan was struck by a big quake. Is it coincidence, or perhaps does one quake cause underground pressure, which may cause another quake?

I live in Southern CA about 15-20 miles north of the San Andreas in the High Desert. If it does go off and brings a 7.5 to 8.5 or larger quake how much damage do you think it will cause?

GUATEMALA CITY – A strong earthquake has rocked Guatemala and parts of El Salvador, but no there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in either country.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0.

The USGS says it hit Monday morning about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Guatemala City, where it was felt by many residents. There were reports of shaking in the Guatemalan countryside and in El Salvador as well.

Civil protection officials in the two countries says so far there are no reports of injuries or damage, but authorities are still checking.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100118/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_guatemala_earthquake_2

I feel ignorant asking this, but I feel like the earthquake in Haiti seems way too disastrous… possibly preventable. When earthquakes happen in the US they arent as devastating. Was it just a very harsh quake?

Is it Strike Slip, Subduction or Thrust faults? Well then again we have to wait for results of this after all the Bodies are recovered or rescued. At this time I morn all who died in this quake.

My 13 month old was about to fall asleep, and then she started crying frantically and wouldn’t calm down. About 4 minutes later, we had a 4.7 magnitude earthquake here in LA and as soon as the quake stopped, she stopped crying and was fine, just like nothing had happened. I couldn’t find any supporting info online, was wondering if anyone had anecdotal or factual info on this topic.

We had a 4.3 a couple days ago, not nearly as horrific as the one in Haiti. But our dog Gina kept wanting in and out, in and out, she did this about 5-6 times. I told my husband an earthquake must be coming. Then Gina came inside one last time, laid down in front of us and stared at us. I said well here it comes. About 15 seconds later we had the quake. Do you think this was just a fluke or do animals really know these things?

Could you please critique this essay for history? It is about interviewing somebody about a world event.

Even though it only lasted 10 to 15 seconds, this event killed 63 people, injured 3,757 many people homeless, and an estimated six billion in damages. So when I told my dad about the project he immediately chose the date October 17th, 1989, for the Universal Essay where he talked about the 7.0 magnitude Loma Prieta.
On that day, October 17th, 1989, my dad wasn’t doing anything interesting like most people; he was just taking a nap. At a friend’s appartment in San Jose, he was sleeping on the couch like I would expect him to do today. At twenty-five years old, he was new to California and didn’t except many surprises, so he was in for a surprise. At 5:04 my dad woke up, to the breaking of a glass, and looking out the window he saw the tree’s shaking vigorously, and the walls of the apartment jolting. He remembers staring at a glass vase when it fell and broke. It dawned on him that it was an earthquake, and he looked for cover. In panic he said, he dove under the couch however it would only fit his head.
After the earthquake was over, his friend came back to see if he was okay, and his head was stuck underneath the sofa. So after he got out, he saw that a lot of things broken like, the glass that fell to the floor that woke him up. He then remembers rushing outside and seeing everybody out, some with scrapes and bruises, but overall it was okay. There were lots of helpful people the time after that, handing out food, and water. Everyone was so nice, talking to strangers, and helping one another out. Mostly he forgot because he was drossy from the nap.
I think my dad was a fair source of information because he did tell me what he was doing, and the event in a picture that I could understand. He told me somewhat of what the room looked like, and understood the event he did by telling me details of the details of the quake. The thing that didn’t make him an excellent source was because he was sleeping until the event, so he wasn’t fully conscious while witnessing it. My first reaction to my dad’s story was laughter, because I couldn’t imagine him getting stuck under a sofa, panicking, or as a twenty-five year old. But after I got over that fact, and saw how many people died, it was very sad, however he went on about how everybody was so kind after, it was very uplifting to know that the people were so unselfish. Even though this event was still a tragedy, the Loma Prieta earthquake can also be seen as a heartwarming story where not only thousands of Californians worked and helped together in a disaster, but the rest of the United States watching and aiding them.

THANKS :D
Hailei

Are they sure that the ‘Big Quake’ is going to happen this year or is it just a guest?

Because they’re doing more preparation in schools this year but did not prepare at all last year.

I am under the impression that many little earthquakes…2.2 here…a couple months later a 2.6..a couple months later a 4.1…for example means pressure is being relieved. But could it also mean a much larger quake is coming?
COME ON??? No one has a clue?

Do you believe in God?

Can you prove that God was responsible for this disaster?

———————–

God hasn’t caused the earth ozone layer to shrink, or the atmosphere to become polluted, or the trees to be destroyed. Do you know who is responsible for all the earth disasters.

Even some Catholic Cardinals say "its an act of God" To illustrate: While visiting San Pedro Sacatepéquez the Friday after the quake a man pawing through the remains of his home dejectedly told me: “This is punishment from God, because we have been very bad people.”
Where, you may wonder, did he and many others of these humble hardworking people get such an idea? The next day it became apparent. The Catholic Cardinal of Guatemala, Mario Casariego, said, as quoted in the country’s principal newspaper:
“In these moments of great calamities to the people, the teaching of the Holy Scriptures comes to mind: God loves and because he loves, he corrects, sets straight and awakens. . . . Haven’t we resisted so much that we have obligated God to work in this way?” Then he added that helping to rebuild the Cathedral and other destroyed churches would “be the symbol of an authentic and personal return to God.”—El Imparcial, February 7, 1976, page 6.

What does your gut sense tell you: Will the next very destructive quake devastate Los Angeles or San Francisco? I have lived in both cities and wonder how either metropolis would deal with the vast disruption that a quake of magnitude 7 or higher would produce. I have a strong sense that this event is on the near horizon and I would like other people’s opinion.

I am doing a project fo science. I have to find 10 recent earthquakes with a magnitude greater than5.0 on the Richter scale. Then I have to compile my fidings in a table that includes the epicenter and the magnitude of the quake, the damage it caused, and any other interesting information about the quake. Please help me find earthquakes and a place to make a table.

I had been a little skeptical about that until the late 1980’s. I live in the midwest where we have some quakes, the New Madrid Fault. I lived next to a house where there was a dog and I had an 8 week old puppy.
3 minutes or so before the 4.5 or so quake, the other dog, a hound, started to howl, and I thought it was sick (it was old) and my puppy literally jumped up in my arms. I thought she was reacting to the other dog’s howling. Just then I felt something and heard a roar, like a loud engine or something, but did not really realize it was a quake at first. I went inside a minute later and my Mom said, "Did you feel the earthquake"? A minute later radio and tv were talking about the quake. This was in St. Louis in 1987 or 1988. It was probably less than a 5 on the Richter scale. But the dogs reacted a full minute-3 minutes ahead of time.

for science we needed to answer these questions… can any one help? our science teacher gave us this site to work with: quake.wr.usgs.gov/study/

For CA- how many [earthquakes] in the last hour?
how many in the last day?
what is the magnitude of the largest?

what is the location and magnitude of the quake nearest to us on the US map? where in the US are there the most earthquakes? the least? what dates are covered for this listing?

How many earthquakes occurred on the most recent month (8-30 days)?
Where in the world are most of the earthquakes located?

For significant quakes give the following:
highest magnitude- number, location
deepest focus location (in earth)- how deep?
closest to surface
caused the most damage

Belleville, IL 10:19 a.m., CST

Did everybody feel this last aftershock? 5 hours after the first quake and we just had another small aftershock come through.. This one was smaller though and shorter… I hope this is the end of this stuff!!!

My mom was talking to her friend in Indiana and her friend screamed and asked her if she felt it, 6 seconds later the wave had reached us in Illinois…
Son’s dad is a Dr. off of Ballas in St. Louis – says he didn’t feel it at his office… he says he was up (Wildwood, MO) for the first one but didn’t feel it either… he must be brain dead….

Has anyone been following up on it lately? There has been about a good 100 to 200 or so, most small. Here’s a list:

http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Maps/115-33_eqs.htm

Its in a geothermal area near a dormant volcano. Its getting annoying aside from nerve racking trying to sleep at night.
Here’s a recent report of earthquakes, man they just keep coming, gah, I hope its just easing pressure off of San Andreas.
