They had said the Easter earthquake in Mexico relived pressure on the San Andreas Fault. Now they just came out with a new study saying it is "Locked and loaded" and is overdue for a very large quake. Which is correct?

And it completely freaked people out when they went outside and saw the Milky Way just blazing away overhead. They had hundreds of calls to 911 with people asking if the sky got affected by the quake.

Is that true?

I have a few questions…

One, I live in Bakersfield, CA… not too far from the San Andreas Fault. If the next "big one" is predicted to be 8.0, what will that radiate to in Bakersfield?

Two, my one story house was built in 1978. Do you think it will collapse?

And third, will it be a "rolling" quake or a "side to side" shake?

Any serious and professional opinions would be greatly appreciated!

When they have enough money.

After the 1971 Symore quake destroyed the Veterans Hospital. In the mid 90s a law requiring hospital to earthquake proof by 2008, but two years after the deadline hospitals are still operating facilities deemed unsafe by the state of california. CBS 2 and KCAL 9 looked into the matter and found that they have enough money to earthquake proof their facilities. I was in St. Joseph’s Hospital Of Orange County, California last month and recently found out that it is unsafe. How scared would you be if you found out that they hospital you were in was consider unsave by the state. St. Joseph’s Hospital Of Orange County, California is suppost to be a Catholic organization. If they say they are following Jesus Christ them they should make patient safety a priority right? I’m a christian though
Marysia, the news look into they’re financial records and found out that they have enough money to earthquake proof their buildings.

Quake in Haiti: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 21:53:10 UTC

HAARP starts charging up the high atmosphere 48 hours before release time:

http://maestro.haarp.alaska.edu/cgi-bin/scmag/disp-scmag.cgi?date=20100110&Bx=on

10 January 2010 UTC – 16:00

Charge continues through next day:

http://maestro.haarp.alaska.edu/cgi-bin/scmag/disp-scmag.cgi?date=20100111&Bx=on

And on the 12, after 48 hours, atmosphere is fully charged:

http://maestro.haarp.alaska.edu/cgi-bin/scmag/disp-scmag.cgi?date=20100112&Bx=on

10 January 2010 UTC – 16:00

Release time.

Time to arrive to target, 10 Km under ground: 6 hours.

Check the graphs. The activity is high only before surface earthquakes. HAARP cannot cause quakes under 18 Km deep.

Does anyone else see this connection? Montserrat and Haiti are both in the caribbean arc. Montserrat had a major volcanic explosion on the 8th, and 4 days later the major quake in Haiti. Is the volcanic activity a precursor to possible earthquakes? I know one can not possibly predict such things. It’s kind of like the weather. Only theories. Thoughts? Theories? Scientific explanations anyone?

A small earthquake starts a lamppost vibrating back and forth. The amplitude of the vibration of the top of the lamppost is 6.5 cm at the moment the quake stops, and 8.6 s later it is 2.1 cm.

-What is the time constant for the damping of the oscillation?
-What was the amplitude of the oscillation 4.3 s after the quake stopped?

if it did how badly? did they have any deaths?
my friend use to live in that area and has only recently moved to australia, i know this is really late after the quake but she’s worried bout some of her friends + family as she hasn’t heard from any of them.

I know, it’s late to ask this question, but for those of us in the LA area, did you feel it? what did you experience? I talked to so many friends who swear they didn’t even know what was going on! they felt absolutely nothing! I live in the San Fernando valley and only noticed the water in my pool undulating back and forth before I realized it may have been a quake. I was having a bbq with family and friends and they were saying I was crazy for even thinking that! But you already know what happened…

I’ve read that doesn’t happen, but we were watching the news and saw that now Japan had a large quake. I studied that little earthquakes happen around us all the time, but the large ones are not as common. Could the recent large quakes be triggering the ones like Japan just had?

Here is a quote from an article regarding the quake in Italy (L’Aquilla).

"The U.S. Geological Survey said the big quake was magnitude 6.3, but Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics put it at 5.8 and more than a dozen aftershocks followed."

I know that the Richter scale is logarithmic, so this difference is actually substantial. Do estimates normally vary this much?
Are you saying that it is different because one measurement was made on the N. American plate and the other made on the European plate?

I live in Missouri pretty much right on this fault line. I was wondering if you know about any new predictions regarding this fault line. Is a quake way over due? Do they have an estimated time on when we should get a quake? Where can I go to find this information? Thank you.

A few days after the big quake in Chile, people are starting to loot. They have not eaten for days. Banks are closed and couldn’t operate even if they were open, so there is no money available to buy things. If people are starving, is it permitted to just take the things you need to survive? Does the law allow that, or are you just supposed to go off and die? Is there any provision in the law for allowing people to do what they must to survive a disaster, or are we required to meekly starve to death?

Please explain.

Include:the mechanics of quake creation within the tectonics system – thus you would discuss seafloor spreading, plate subduction, faulting, magma movement and bedrock.

A recent post on a global-warming website specifically aimed at youngsters implicitly blames man-made global warming for the Haiti earthquake.

In an article titled – with breathtaking insensitivity – ""What the Haiti Quake Means for the Climate Movement"" (because that’s the main concern here, right?) it says "as the planet heats up, disasters are becoming more frequent and severe" and that Haiti is just the latest example of this.

Although it hedges by stating that ""it is inherently difficult to map changes in the Earth’s climate to any specific event"", it leaves the young reader in no doubt as to the underlying cause, saying ""every time a natural disaster hits, I think about fossil fuels"" and that ""what we know is that burning fossil fuels is altering the climate, increasing the likelihood that disasters like this one will occur.""

It’s only a short article. Have a read and see what you think. Lowest of the low? Are there *any* depths to which they won’t stoop?

If this is true that Puente hills fault is supposed to make a 7.3 Landers Size quake from the San Gabriel Valley to Downtown LA. How come this isn’t well known in the US Mainstream Media like Hayward, New Madrid, San Andreas, Denali, Alaska Subduction, Denali, and the Cascadia are. Besides that LA and the rest of CA have so many Earthquake faults to investigate with.

(CNN) — An early morning earthquake rattled northern Illinois on Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was originally reported as having a magnitude of 4.3, but the USGS later downgraded it to magnitude 3.8. It hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground. The USGS pinpointed the quake between the towns of Virgil and Sycamore, Illinois.http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/10/illinois.earthquake/index.html?section=cnn_latest

well, im 15, and recently undergoing a change of lifestyle.
basically im trying to make myself a better person.
anyway, lately the only thing ive been really thinking about is death and natural disasters.

today wasnt a major quake for my city, atleast in my house it was as if 10 heavy truckes rolled by.
anyway, we’re somewhat close to L.A and would like to know how bad earthquakes would affect us?

all i can do now, is pray.

As we look at the tragedy in Haiti….
As we listen to report after report of aid being sent in by air, sea, and land…
As we pray for the innocent lives to recover from this sad event…..
… is anyone else noticing the pictures of the palaces of the "elite" and the absolute squalor of the "average person"?

The US has sent over a BILLION dollars to Haiti over the last decade. MILLIONS more pour in every month. Now a FORTUNE of money and aid is flowing in during the aftermath of the quake.

WHY???

Isn’t it obvious that the war lords and the powerful elite are KEEPING the money and not helping their own people? Haiti is RIPE with violence and corruption. I think the combined financial loss of this earthquake was around 0 bucks!

Haiti is an outhouse! If we’re going to send aid (today and in the future) – shouldn’t we have some OVER SIGHT as to where the money is going?

Clearly, the UN is incapable of handling ANYTHING, so maybe we should just close our wallets until the people of Haiti make a change for themselves. Thoughts?

Back in 1994, The Northridge, California earthquake struck. Then a year later, on the same date, Kobe, Japan was struck by a big quake. Is it coincidence, or perhaps does one quake cause underground pressure, which may cause another quake?

GUATEMALA CITY – A strong earthquake has rocked Guatemala and parts of El Salvador, but no there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in either country.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0.

The USGS says it hit Monday morning about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Guatemala City, where it was felt by many residents. There were reports of shaking in the Guatemalan countryside and in El Salvador as well.

Civil protection officials in the two countries says so far there are no reports of injuries or damage, but authorities are still checking.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100118/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_guatemala_earthquake_2

I feel ignorant asking this, but I feel like the earthquake in Haiti seems way too disastrous… possibly preventable. When earthquakes happen in the US they arent as devastating. Was it just a very harsh quake?

My 13 month old was about to fall asleep, and then she started crying frantically and wouldn’t calm down. About 4 minutes later, we had a 4.7 magnitude earthquake here in LA and as soon as the quake stopped, she stopped crying and was fine, just like nothing had happened. I couldn’t find any supporting info online, was wondering if anyone had anecdotal or factual info on this topic.

We had a 4.3 a couple days ago, not nearly as horrific as the one in Haiti. But our dog Gina kept wanting in and out, in and out, she did this about 5-6 times. I told my husband an earthquake must be coming. Then Gina came inside one last time, laid down in front of us and stared at us. I said well here it comes. About 15 seconds later we had the quake. Do you think this was just a fluke or do animals really know these things?
