for example, when an insect outbreak occurs, forests become more susceptible to forest fires, and if the insects are of the defoliating sort, they can cause trees to die directly. does that make it a natural disaster?

A coworker told me of a top ten list of natural disaster that came on yahoo recently. He described one of the disasters as occurring about 20 or 40 years ago in some central America country like Ecuador where gas had leaked throughout a city and the gas caught on fire and burned many people. I looked all over and couldn’t find any disaster like this in history. Does anybody know of a disaster like this happening?

What are some of FEMA plans when it comes to preparing for natural disaster emergencies such as hurricane, tornados and earthquakes. Are they well published in terms of what the plans are depending on the area, the type of disaster, the severity of disaster, etc? Is FEMA well prepared for every type of natural disaster that can happen in the US?

facilities in the Persian Gulf. A total of 120,000 gallons of crude oil(density 0.86 g/cm^3) spilled onto the desert soil. At first it was thought that 50,000 gallons eventually flowed into a reservoir that supplies drinking water to several communities.Later it was learned that only 35,000 gallons had flowed into the reservoir. The clean up crews removed the crude oil from the reservoir in a little over week.It took much longer to remove the crude oil from the sandy desert soil. After two weeks of continuous effort,, only 5000 gallons of oil had been removed. This area of the desert is irrigated and used for growing crops,,most of which were killed by the crude oil oil.It is not yet known if all if all the oil can be removed from the soil and if crops will grow in the region again.

a.- Which physical property of the crude oil allowed it to be easily cleaned uo from the water reservoir?
.b.- Why is the earthquake in the article considered to be a natural disaster?
c.-Calculate the percent deviation of the first estimate of the amount of crude oil in the reservoir compared to the actual amount. Including writing the equation, substituting values, and indicating the answer.
d.-What was the rate of the crude oil recovery from the soil in gallons per day for two week period described in the article? Show the work.
e.- Explain why the crude oil in the soil would be considered pollution.Be sure to use the term concentration in the answer.

The Bubonic Plague of the mid-fourteenth century was the most devastating natural disaster in European History. We now konw that this plague was caused by rats that were infected by bacteria-carrying fleas. The rats carried the disease as they were unknowingly transported with cargo ships through trade routes. A third of the entire population of Europe is thought to have been killed by this plague. What caused the Bubonic Plague?

in the IPCC WG II report, Chapter 7, supplementary material?

Is it more appropriate to link rise in natural disaster spending to coastal population trends?

Why does the graph they do include only look at a limited number of years from 1970 to 2005?

http://sciencepolicy.colorado.edu/prometheus/archives/climate_change/001169this_is_just_embaras.html

@ dana1981

So you DO think its appropriate for a panel that is commissioned to study climate change to link the cost of a supossedly GLOBAL trend in temperature rise to US spending on Natural disasters over a cherry picked time period?

Do you honestly think you can show a credible scientific link that shows that a rise in GLOBAL temperatures are responsible for US spending on disasters?

Don’t you see the poor science behind this graph?

Doesn’t it bother you that a panel that is supposed to review scientific literature and report on the truth would make such an obvious agenda driven graph?

Think about it before answering. It could be anything from a major mal-funtion of our power grids to nationwide contaminated food. It could be another terrorist attack or severe gas shortages. Are you confident America is ready for it miltarily and financially? Have you ever survived a natural disaster? Me I survived Hugo. It wasn’t the worst but it was hard. No power, gas, or groceries for about 3 weeks. Are you ready?

Please examine the evidence. What do you think about it? Is it possible?

Nobody here knows whether the earthquake in Haiti was a natural disaster or a technological attack.

If you just assume it was a natural disaster, you are probably not current with what technology is capable of, or you are naively thinking human goodness or the rule of law precludes the actual use of such technology.

I compiled some of my favorite links from the net regarding the possibility that Haiti was caused by HAARP, for the purpose of ushering in a US military occupation, to allow for the the plunder of Haiti’s ample resources by corporations whose dirty work is routinely carried out by our military.

Rather sinister but not unlike what’s happening in Iraq, Afghanistan, Colombia, Africa, and basically all over the world.

Consider the picture that emerges from this collection of articles and videos:

US Secretary of Defense admits technology exists for causing earthquakes, 1997:

Japanese finance minister says US threatened Japan with earthquakes, evidence of HAARP causing Chinese earthquake:

Chavez accuses US of causing Haiti earthquake:

Royal Navy fleet leaves Haiti shortly before the earthquake:
"Naval sources told The Times that the unpublicised cut marked the first time that the Royal Navy has had a significant gap in cover in the Caribbean since the 17th century."

Excellent lecture on HAARP and its capabilities by Dr. Nick Begich

Jesse Ventura did an impressive job with this, interviews key figures and lays out logical arguments:

We’ll see where this is headed, we’ll see whether youtube videos emerge of colored HAARP-type clouds over Haiti before the earthquake, we’ll see who is getting rich from Haiti’s resources…it certainly won’t be the Haitians.

A recent post on a global-warming website specifically aimed at youngsters implicitly blames man-made global warming for the Haiti earthquake.

In an article titled – with breathtaking insensitivity – ""What the Haiti Quake Means for the Climate Movement"" (because that’s the main concern here, right?) it says "as the planet heats up, disasters are becoming more frequent and severe" and that Haiti is just the latest example of this.

Although it hedges by stating that ""it is inherently difficult to map changes in the Earth’s climate to any specific event"", it leaves the young reader in no doubt as to the underlying cause, saying ""every time a natural disaster hits, I think about fossil fuels"" and that ""what we know is that burning fossil fuels is altering the climate, increasing the likelihood that disasters like this one will occur.""

It’s only a short article. Have a read and see what you think. Lowest of the low? Are there *any* depths to which they won’t stoop?

I hate to awake you from your slumber but We are not helping Haiti and it wasn’t a natural disaster, US troops are now controlling another country and you and many others just believe what you hear and do not do your ow research.

The US caused the eartquake by H.A.A.R.P.!

(HHARP)

Earlier this week, a Spanish newspaper quoted Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez as saying the U.S. Navy caused the Haiti earthquake with a tectonic weapon. The Venezuelan media reported that the earthquake “may be associated with the project called HAARP, a system that can generate violent and unexpected changes in climate,” Press TV reported on January 21.

Chavez cited a report from Russia’s Northern Fleet. According to the report, the U.S. Navy made a mistake with a secret “earthquake weapon” and the result was the Haitian earthquake. The Russians believe the intended target was Iran. “Though Russian Northern Fleets’ report was not confirmed by official sources, the comments attracted special attention in some US and Russian media outlets including Fox news and Russia Today,” writes Pragmatic Witness blog. “Russia Today’s report said that Moscow has also been accused of possessing and utilizing such weapons.”
“Speaking on his weekly television show, Chavez opined that the U.S. mission in Haiti was a ruse to initiate military occupation,” the New York Daily News said.
Venezuelan media “added that the U.S. government’s HAARP program, an atmospheric research facility in Alaska (and frequent subject of conspiracy theories), was also to blame for a Jan. 9 quake in Eureka, Calif., and may have been behind the 7.8-magnitude quake in China that killed nearly 90,000 people in 2008,” Fox News reported on Thursday.
In 1997, former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen made the following statement:
Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It’s real, and that’s the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.

Cohen was talking about longitudinal EM wave interferometers (LWI) technology (also known as “Tesla howitzers”). LWI waves can effortlessly pass through the ocean and earth. Experts claim LWI waves can in fact pass through the earth and emerge on the other side. The United States and Russia have possessed this technology for decades.
Cohen would have you believe it is a technology that only terrorists would use. It depends on who you would call a terrorist.
In 1966, Professor Gordon J. F. MacDonald, associate director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles, was a member of the President’s Science Advisory Committee. MacDonald published papers on the use of environmental-control technologies for military purposes, including “earthquake engineering” (he also wrote about weather manipulation, climate modification, polar ice cap melting or destabilization, ozone depletion techniques).
“The revealed secrets surprised legislators,” writes Dr. Nick Begich. “Would an inquiry into the state of the art of electromagnetic manipulation surprise lawmakers today? They may find out that technologies developed out of the HAARP experiments in Alaska could deliver on Gordon MacDonald’s vision because leading-edge scientists are describing global weather as not only air pressure and thermal systems, but also as an electrical system.”

Of course, we have no direct evidence the Pentagon used HAARP to touch off a massive earthquake in Haiti.

The U.S., however, has exploited the earthquake to send the military to the stricken island nation. “They brazenly occupied Haiti without consulting the UN or the OAS (Organization of American States),” said Chavez earlier in the week. Bolivian President Evo Morales said Wednesday he would request an emergency UN meeting “to repudiate and reject this military occupation of the United States in Haiti.”
“It’s not right the United States should use this natural disaster to invade and militarily occupy Haiti,” he told a press conference.
“The unspoken mission of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) with headquarters in Miami and US military installations throughout Latin America is to ensure the maintenance of subservient national regimes, namely US proxy governments, committed to the Washington Consensus and the neoliberal policy agenda,” writes Michel Chossudovsky.
Source(s):
“While US military personnel will at the outset be actively involved in emergency and disaster relief, this renewed US military presence in Haiti will be used to establish a foothold in the country as well pursue America’s strategic and geopolitical objectives in

If the region is so prone to powerful earthquakes, then why weren’t buildings designed to resist the effects of a catastrophic earthquake? Clearly, that would be cheaper and safer than having 200,000 people die, anarchy in the streets, and people with nowhere to go. Does anyone know if the new buildings will be designed to withstand the full force of a natural disaster? Part of the problem now is that the Haitian government did not have strong building codes.
Yes, I know it’s a poor country. But they will eventually rebuild. It would be cheaper for other countries to lend Haiti money for earthquake proof infrastructure instead of having to bail it out each time a disaster strikes.

AN OVERVIEW OF ANCIENT HISTORY
Between six and seven thousand years ago, signs of disruption began to appear throughout the ancient civilization of the Near East. For nearly a thousand years the cultures of that region underwent a change; a period of regression. As chasos and dissatisfaction grew, problems intensified and the ancient societies of the Near East slipped deeper into despair. Then about 6,000 years ago, the inevitable happened–civilization fell apart.
What caused the breakup of civilization six thousand years ago? Some historians had speculated that a natural disaster, such as an earthquake or some similar event took place, but they were unable to find any evidence to support their claims. Besides, all of the clues pointed in the direction of an event quite different from that of an earthquake – a condition that grew over an extended period of time. The picture is on of communities in turmoil, of societies collapsing and falling apart from within; of chaos, dissatisfaction and unrest. The most accurate summation would be to say that the people just began fighting and killing one another – this is the best way to describe what was happening in the Near East 6,000 years ago.
Soon after the unsettling of civilization, another interesting change began to take place. This change occurred in the area of the Caucasus Mountains. There, in West Asia, a previously unknown group of people suddenly appeared as if from out nowhere. Collectively they are known as the Indo-Europeans, Caucasians or white people. The facts show that they first entered the area around 6,000 years ago. 2,000 years later their invasions would bring them into contact with the civilized nations to the south. Because they had no fixed homes and wandered about from place to place, historians usually describe their way of life as ‘nomadic’.
Since they were so backward, it is very difficult to use archaeological evidence to help pin down the original home of the Indo-European tongues.
With the arrival of the Caucasians into that cold and sparsely populated area of the world, the few older communities, which earlier had been established there in Europe were either abandoned or destroyed. The evidence clearly suggests that the original inhabitants of those settlements either fled or were killed off by the newly arriving whites. After the whites showed up, drastic changes started to occur in the region north of the Caucasus.
A time period around 3500 B.C. forms a caesura between Old Europe and Indo- European Europe. It is a time when life in the large villages and townships either stops or is markedly changed. The degeneerative changes in the settlements of the Old European Civilization may be assumed to indicate the beginning of the Indo-European presence.
Following the breakup of the ancient societies and the arrival of the whiteman in Europe, the people of the Near East worked to re-establish the level of peace and security they had once known. Slowly, over time, communities were rebuilt, prosperity was restored and signs of new live started to emerge.
In Africa, along the banks of the Nile River, Egypt blossomed into the Pyramid Age. In Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the Sumerians too, established a civilization reknown for its high level of culture and refinement. Even as far away as India, along the tributaries of the Indus River, the Dravidians constructed the magnificent twin cities of Mohoenjo-Daro and Harrapa. Rich in arts, sciences and the necessities of life these civilizations laid the foundation for trade and finance, architecture, geometry, mathematics and astronomy, philosophy, law and government, writing and religion.
Throughout the period of reconstruction, not much attention was paid to the nomads of the north; the threat never seemed significant. From time to time, a few nomadic bands would wander down into the center of civilization, but their activities never amounted to more than occasional raids or skirmishes. In the course of time small groups of the whites were abe to establish camps along the hills and deserts outside of Mesopotamia. Although such camps survived mainly by robbing and scavenging, their overall impact upon civilization remained minimal; most of the whites were at that time still beyound range up in the hills.
But the Caucasians of the north were not to remain a distant novelty forever. 2,000 years after their arrival, the nomadic tribes began to move away from what for years had been their home. As they swarmed down, out of the hills, some of them began to travel west, toward the Aegean Sea. At the same time another large group trudged southward, in the direction of the centers of civilization. "for unknown reasons, the group went into a ferment shortly before 2000 B.C. and started spilling out all over europe and western Asia.
As they moved southward, they were joined by smaller groups – members of their own who had earlier taken up positions along the hills and caravan routes ouside of Mesopotamia. As they advanced toward the centers of civilization, they began a series of violent and devastating attacks. One by one the great cities of the ancient world began to topple. So complete was the effect of the onslaught that when it was all over, nothing was left standing.
During a period of about three hundred years, beginning soon after 1700 B.C., the civilized world was overrun by barbarian conquerors. Hill peoples living north and east of Mesopotamia, tribesmen from the desert fringes of Syria, Palestine and northern Arabia, together with wide ranging war bands originating from the northern steppe combined in varying proportions to attack all existing centers of civilized life. The range of these barbarian conquests was never again equaled…At the two extremes of civilized world, in Crete and in India, little but smoking ruins remaind.
So the facts show that after the reconstruction of civilization, the whites came out of the hills and destroyed it all. Every historian agrees that the uprooting of those civilizations were the resul of attacks from white barbarians who came rushing down, out of the hills of West Asia.
In India, Mohonjo-daro was sacked and its people were enslaved or killed. The outcome was the same for those of Mesopotamia and Egypt too.

Ok so during the past week it seems like i can predict the weather by my nipples reactions. Everytime i get this weird tingle in my left nipple, it gets cloudy and starts to rain. This is a serious question guys…Every time i get a tingle in my right nipple the winds exceed 35 mph and it starts to thunder and lightning. And finally, when both of my nipples tingle at the same time, a natural disaster occurs. When the big tsumani hit i wanted to rip my nipples off it hurt soooo bad. I think this is a problem but im too embaressed to talk to my parents about it and go to the doctors. What do i do??? It gets soo bad i want to get them surgically removed but i want to have kids and breastfeed someday. I know this sounds crazy but this is a real question and i need real answers!! Thank you so much!

My husband and I would really like to join or become involved with some kind of relief organisation; you know, the ones that are always at the front lines when there is some kind of natural disaster, like tsunamis and earthquakes, or famines and the like… They need people to go there and help out, but I have no idea how to go about volunteering for such a thing.
Anyone know??
