Here is a quote from an article regarding the quake in Italy (L’Aquilla).

"The U.S. Geological Survey said the big quake was magnitude 6.3, but Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics put it at 5.8 and more than a dozen aftershocks followed."

I know that the Richter scale is logarithmic, so this difference is actually substantial. Do estimates normally vary this much?
Are you saying that it is different because one measurement was made on the N. American plate and the other made on the European plate?

From the pictures that I have seen, it seems that Haiti is more devastated than Chile yet it has a lesser magnitude

(2/27/10)…Pat Robertson today argued that the 8.8 magnitude of the earthquake that struck Chile early this morning should serve as a warning to the population that “God is even angrier with them than he is with the people of Haiti.”

So is he better as
…an evangelist
…a seismologist
…a new hybrid of evangelism and seismology?

(CNN) — An early morning earthquake rattled northern Illinois on Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was originally reported as having a magnitude of 4.3, but the USGS later downgraded it to magnitude 3.8. It hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground. The USGS pinpointed the quake between the towns of Virgil and Sycamore, Illinois.http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/10/illinois.earthquake/index.html?section=cnn_latest

I really need to understand this:

What is the magnitude of an earthquake that is 3.7 times as strong as another earthquake that measures 5.2 on the Richter scale?

Thanks in advance!

GUATEMALA CITY – A strong earthquake has rocked Guatemala and parts of El Salvador, but no there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in either country.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0.

The USGS says it hit Monday morning about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Guatemala City, where it was felt by many residents. There were reports of shaking in the Guatemalan countryside and in El Salvador as well.

Civil protection officials in the two countries says so far there are no reports of injuries or damage, but authorities are still checking.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100118/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_guatemala_earthquake_2

My boss has asked me to research the effects of having small earthquakes back to back. Any ideas of what this means or what it ‘could’ mean? Please dont send me links to pages of maps of CA with the earthquakes and their magnitude ect. Ive got all of that info.
Please answer with a link where you found the info.

Thanks so very much!

Could you please critique this essay for history? It is about interviewing somebody about a world event.

Even though it only lasted 10 to 15 seconds, this event killed 63 people, injured 3,757 many people homeless, and an estimated six billion in damages. So when I told my dad about the project he immediately chose the date October 17th, 1989, for the Universal Essay where he talked about the 7.0 magnitude Loma Prieta.
On that day, October 17th, 1989, my dad wasn’t doing anything interesting like most people; he was just taking a nap. At a friend’s appartment in San Jose, he was sleeping on the couch like I would expect him to do today. At twenty-five years old, he was new to California and didn’t except many surprises, so he was in for a surprise. At 5:04 my dad woke up, to the breaking of a glass, and looking out the window he saw the tree’s shaking vigorously, and the walls of the apartment jolting. He remembers staring at a glass vase when it fell and broke. It dawned on him that it was an earthquake, and he looked for cover. In panic he said, he dove under the couch however it would only fit his head.
After the earthquake was over, his friend came back to see if he was okay, and his head was stuck underneath the sofa. So after he got out, he saw that a lot of things broken like, the glass that fell to the floor that woke him up. He then remembers rushing outside and seeing everybody out, some with scrapes and bruises, but overall it was okay. There were lots of helpful people the time after that, handing out food, and water. Everyone was so nice, talking to strangers, and helping one another out. Mostly he forgot because he was drossy from the nap.
I think my dad was a fair source of information because he did tell me what he was doing, and the event in a picture that I could understand. He told me somewhat of what the room looked like, and understood the event he did by telling me details of the details of the quake. The thing that didn’t make him an excellent source was because he was sleeping until the event, so he wasn’t fully conscious while witnessing it. My first reaction to my dad’s story was laughter, because I couldn’t imagine him getting stuck under a sofa, panicking, or as a twenty-five year old. But after I got over that fact, and saw how many people died, it was very sad, however he went on about how everybody was so kind after, it was very uplifting to know that the people were so unselfish. Even though this event was still a tragedy, the Loma Prieta earthquake can also be seen as a heartwarming story where not only thousands of Californians worked and helped together in a disaster, but the rest of the United States watching and aiding them.

THANKS :D
Hailei

an average movement of about 5m(16ft) along the san andreas fault was associated with the devastating 1906 san fransanciso earthquake that killed people and destroyed properties. assuming that all displacement along the fault was produced by earth motions of this magnitude, how often must such earthquakes have occurred in order to account for the total displacement?

What does your gut sense tell you: Will the next very destructive quake devastate Los Angeles or San Francisco? I have lived in both cities and wonder how either metropolis would deal with the vast disruption that a quake of magnitude 7 or higher would produce. I have a strong sense that this event is on the near horizon and I would like other people’s opinion.

I am doing a project fo science. I have to find 10 recent earthquakes with a magnitude greater than5.0 on the Richter scale. Then I have to compile my fidings in a table that includes the epicenter and the magnitude of the quake, the damage it caused, and any other interesting information about the quake. Please help me find earthquakes and a place to make a table.

for science we needed to answer these questions… can any one help? our science teacher gave us this site to work with: quake.wr.usgs.gov/study/

For CA- how many [earthquakes] in the last hour?
how many in the last day?
what is the magnitude of the largest?

what is the location and magnitude of the quake nearest to us on the US map? where in the US are there the most earthquakes? the least? what dates are covered for this listing?

How many earthquakes occurred on the most recent month (8-30 days)?
Where in the world are most of the earthquakes located?

For significant quakes give the following:
highest magnitude- number, location
deepest focus location (in earth)- how deep?
closest to surface
caused the most damage

And can this be justified mathematically? If so, how?

what it was on an average during the two thousand years before 1914." Survival into a New Earth…
Luke 21:11 uses the phrase "and there will be great earthquakes,…"
Jesus did not detail what constitutes a great earthquake. He simply stated that there will be great earthquakes and these will be in one place after another.
Seismology is a new science with the first seismograph invented in 1880. For this reason accurate records of earthquakes measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale have only become possible since then. Accurate and complete seismological records are now readily obtainable. http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eqlists/eqstats.html (July 2005) provided a list of earthquakes for this period resulting in over 1000 deaths. From 1902 to 2001
Where is your proof to dispute this?
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that large earthquakes occur about once a year. Smaller earthquakes, only magnitude 2 earthquakes, occur several hundred times a day www.encyclopedia.com stated 1 January 2005

On 25 Mar 2007 00:42:02 (UTC): NEAR WEST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN
Geographic coordinates: 37.537N, 136.437E an earth quake of Magnitude: 7.3 Mw at a depth of 32 kilo meter was reported and the seismologist alerted the people to move away from sea shore just because they feared that it may create Tsunami. Later on they found that only the wave height was increased by just 10 C.M . Later on the warning was with drawn. I did the same thing on 26 Dec 2004. That is after I sensed the major earthquake that signal lasted for an unusual time of 12 minutes and as there was no report from any part of the world about the damage due to earthquake I suspected that sea water may rise to a great height. That is why I requested the local T.V.stations to issue the alert message to be ready to move away from breaches. They have not only ignored my warning but the meteorological department criticized me as my invention is like the Ramar pillai invention ( The fraudulent herbal petrol inventor).

How would you try to assess the frequency and magnitude of prehistoric earthquakes that have occurred on the San Adreas fault in North California?

Technorati Tags: , , ,

If you did tell me about it and the effects it should appear on USGS in an hour.
I actually think we had a much smaller one yesterday.
Many people around the block probably felt shaking>>> I’m now guessing it was a 2.9 or 3.1 no higher unless the depth was very low and the magnitude was higher. On the Mercalli scale i would rate it a IV. PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION! I ONLY HAVE ONE ANSWER!!!

when according to the U.S. Geological Survey, earthquakes have remained constant in their frequency?

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learning/topics/increase_in_earthquakes.php

"We continue to be asked by many people throughout the world if earthquakes are on the increase. Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant.

A partial explanation may lie in the fact that in the last twenty years, we have definitely had an increase in the number of earthquakes we have been able to locate each year. This is because of the tremendous increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and the many improvements in global communications. In 1931, there were about 350 stations operating in the world; today, there are more than 8,000 stations and the data now comes in rapidly from these stations by electronic mail, internet and satellite. This increase in the number of stations and the more timely receipt of data has allowed us and other seismological centers to locate earthquakes more rapidly and to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier years. The NEIC now locates about 20,000 earthquakes each year or approximately 50 per day. Also, because of the improvements in communications and the increased interest in the environment and natural disasters, the public now learns about more earthquakes.

According to long-term records (since about 1900), we expect about 17 major earthquakes (7.0 – 7.9) and one great earthquake (8.0 or above) in any given year."
