Richter scale will give you the energy released during earthquake. Actually Mr Charles Richter invented a method in 1935 in Pasadena university by which by recording the shaking from different places we can found the energy released at the point called focus. He was doing his research with wood Anderson seismograph to record the events in California state only. Now because of good improvements in electronic we are able to record the seismic events even up to about 11000 k.m with the use of modern broad band seismographs. There are different types of method now used to measure Richter scale. That is Mb measuring body wave like P & S waves. Ms measuring surface wave like L & R wave. The modern and fairly accurate is moment magnitude. This measure the force required to shift the earth to that much of distance recorded in seismograph. The earthquake created the Tsunami on 26th Dec 2004 was reported as 8.6 by Ms scale in India. Later on it was confirmed by US as 9.3 using moment magnitude system.By using my simple earthquake alarm designed by me for the cost of US $ 25 in the year 2001 I reported the event as I have sensed the major earthquake which I have never heared in the histpry of earthquake. I cautioned the Local T.V 2 hours before Tsunami struck our coast to issue the alert message to be ready to move away from sea shore. But My warning was ignored. The chart for energy released for each Richter scale. Approximate TNT (Tri nitro telecom ) Yield for Seismic Energy
1 30 lbs
2. 1 ton
3. 29 ton
4. 1000 ton
5. 32000 ton
6. 1 million ton
7. 32 million ton
8. 1 billion ton
9. 32 billion ton
10 1 trillion ton.

they are different:
moment magnatude is more acrurate by 1.6 magnitude.. i think
richter scales are only used for earthquakes like in california
accurat up to 3.6 magnitude
