(CNN) — An early morning earthquake rattled northern Illinois on Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of downtown Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake was originally reported as having a magnitude of 4.3, but the USGS later downgraded it to magnitude 3.8. It hit just before 4 a.m. CT (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 3 miles underground. The USGS pinpointed the quake between the towns of Virgil and Sycamore, Illinois.http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/10/illinois.earthquake/index.html?section=cnn_latest

Like the first answerer said, forever…Check out the New Madrid Fault Line…
The most powerful quake ever in the Midwest (and the U.S. to date) was in 1811-1812 when four quakes hit the Midwest over a three month period (December through February)…The quakes were 8.0 or higher on the Richter Scale, could be felt in Boston and caused the the Mississippi River to run backwards for three days!…
