Is it a coincidence that some earthquakes in the past were close as far as the date?

Earthquake Questions
Back in 1994, The Northridge, California earthquake struck. Then a year later, on the same date, Kobe, Japan was struck by a big quake. Is it coincidence, or perhaps does one quake cause underground pressure, which may cause another quake?

Close earthquakes such as foreshocks, mainshocks, and aftershocks are related.
The Northridge epicenter and Kobe, Japan are separated by 5,716 miles (9,199 km).
Northridge occurred along a shallow transform fault, Pacific plate versus North American plate.
The Kobe quake was created at a subduction boundary, a very complex one, where both the Pacific and Philippine plate are diving beneath the North American plate (yes, Japan is on the North American plate — cool, huh?). Totally different boundary, totally different type of earthquake.
No, they were not connected.
