april 18, 1906 is the largest in recorded history.
undoubtedly there have been greater ones, but no-one wrote about them.
called the San Francisco quake, the fault actually ruptured for 300 miles.
it’s just that there were more people in San Francisco.
40 miles north of the city, there’s a fence that crossed the fault line.
the ends are now 16 feet apart.
that’s how much displacement there was at that point.
7.8 to 8.1 if i remember correctly.
if you type in 1906 in the google anticipatory line, several quake related terms come up first.
there is an interesting disconnect in calif.
many, maybe most, people think of the quakes 20 years ago as bad.
while they did considerable damage, they were minor compares to the ’06 quake.
the Loma Prieta quake lasted something like 15 seconds.
the ’06 quake lasted 42 seconds.
people were knocked down — the couldn’t stand up.
when the ground moves out from under you, by several feet, you’re in serious trouble.
as is your house, many of the bridges, the water, gas, phone, and electricity.
people just have no concept of the damage that a large quake will cause.

When I was a youngster there was an Earthquake in Kern County…a 7.7…the Kern County Earthquake (?)
Oh…in 1952!
So after reading the other answer…1906 in S.F. 8.6mg…
not in my lifetime but you didn’t ask for the largest in my lifetime did you?
