I’m fed up with working retail. I think I would like to try relief or disaster services work. Suggestions?
Negative and positive answers are all welcome. If you have positive suggestions, please include who and how to contact – if possible. I’m not fed up with the human side/interaction of retail (I’m told I’ve got great customer service skills) its the downsides of retail. Also, I believe that relief work would be more rewarding – vastly. I expect that there would also be downsides to relief work – I think I’m aware of that. I believe that there also some awful aspects to relief work that I haven’t even thought of (for example, I think you might want to get an appendectomy and have medivac insurance before getting in the field, not to mention the dealing with human suffering on a daily and global scale…)

If you’re not ready to make a complete leap, you should consider working for Luxxotica Retail. They own a ton of different companies involved in the world of optics (LensCrafters being the biggie). They have this amazing program called The Gift of Sight, and employees can go on missions trips all around the world (and country). You could find a suitable position within the company and express your interest for doing a missions trip when you’re being interviewed. The hours are long on the trips, but I’ve heard it’s an experience you’ll never forget. Most of the people who go on one mission trip apply for the chance to go on them again and again (expenses paid). You come back with stories, pictures, and new friends. People will walk miles and miles to get there for eye exams and glasses. They can even receive non-prescription sunglasses, which is nice b/c many of the people who get them work out in the sun all the time.
Anyway, doing something like this would be a nice transition to see if you even feel you’re cut out for relief work. It takes a really special person to do it, and I’ve heard it’s a lot tougher on the spirit than most people realize when they go into it. Good luck with it!

Actually.. I would think these were about the same thing…
I would contact… my church, the salvation army, and the red cross…
These are all volunteer organizations, but will know of places that have paid employees….

Sophie gave you the names of good relief organizations. One question? Are you expecting a paycheck? Most of these organizations run with volunteers.
