It’s a Transform fault that was formed 30 million years ago when the Pacific Plate collided with the North American Plate. It’s motion is Right-Lateral Strike-slip(horizontal).
Just south of California in the Gulf of California, Plate rifting is forcing the Pacific plate Northwest and the North American Plate Southeast. In the North the Pacific Plate is being subducted under the North American Plate via the Aleutian Trench just south of Alaska!
Eventually, Los Angeles will be a suburb of San Fransisco!
Oh, did you know that there is a major tectonic plate under North America right now? It’s called the Farallon Plate…check it out, it was once on the boundry with the North American Plate!
