how much damage will the Big One earthquake do in california?

Let’s say a 8.5 earthquake hits in So Cal., as a result of the San Andreas fault.
a. Which counties will be majorly affected?
b. Will buildings, parking structures and freeways collapse? (how effective are the strict codes for buildings).
c. Will there be a big gaping hole under the ground?
d.Will a part of the West Coast split off?
e. how many people do you think will die?
and should i get a dog so it can warn me before hand?

a. Depends on where the epicentre of the quake is.
b. Codes are pretty good in CA, some buildings will collapse, but there likely won’t be widespread collapse. Still, property damage well over 100 billion dollars is not unreasonable to expect.
c. No.
d. No.
e. What time of day the quake hits makes a huge difference here, thousands to over 50 thousand is possible.
No, anecdotal reports of animals warning about quakes don’t seem to be anything more than coincidence. Quake prep your home, keep a flashlight and slippers next to your bed, and most of all, know what to do if a quake hits so you don’t panic.

there would probably be trillions of dollars gone because of it directly and indirectly.
