One of the most used devices is laser equipment that bounces beams off strategically placed reflectors. The purpose of this equipment is to watch for significant and sudden swelling around potential eruption points on the mountain. Other devices continuously "sniff" at existing gas vents to monitor sudden rises in certains gases that could signal increased volcanic activity.
