I’m writing a research paper and I need to know how far from the earth’s crust the epicenter of the earthquake in Chile. Anyone have any idea? If you have a website that says it could you give me the link too so I can site my sources?

The correct answer is that it was actually within the crust. The epicenter was at a depth of about 21 miles below the surface. Here is the Us Geological Society.

The crust of the earth is the whole outer shell basically. All earthquakes come from within this layer as the tectonic plates rub against each other. Here is a wikipedia article which explains the crust as well.

I hope that works, you can also look around the USGS website for information
