Without getting complicated –
There is a very sensitive needle on a spring placed on the ground and it moves according to the vibrations it picks up in the Earth. This needle then has a pen at the end of it’s head that draws the vibrations on a piece of paper….so when there’s an earthquake with lots of vibrations, the needle draws much more than when things are calm.
