A hurricane is a tremendously powerful part of nature and is typically judged to only do damage. It’s power is too great and unpredictable to harness for such things as wind or tidal power. We humans build or plant things and we typically want them to last for a long time. Hurricanes typically destroy man-made and man-planted things. The only way to view what a hurricane does is to look at the restorative power it has to re-establish marine or coastal environments. These would include scouring the near-shore marine and coastline environments free of debris and sweeping it further on-shore. This would allow new coastal plants to re-populate the "scrubbed" areas.
Another aspect is to consider the hurricane’s impact on the pollution that can happen is urban areas. By having a large scouring of the coast line, the pollution can be mixed and diluted by the storms forces. This can allow natural process to reduce the pollution through natural bacterial action that cannot handle the more concentrated pollution.
Because I live near the Gulf Coast, I know many people that will not see anything positive from a hurricane. Still, if we look at the long term of how the coast has existed for many hundreds of thousands of years, this is regular occurrence in some areas, and we cannot expect to always avoid them, but must learn to adapt to their power. Hurricanes will cause people in those areas that are affected regularly to develop better building and living methods. Construction can be made more "hurricane resistant", and people will learn to be able to survive for several days if not weeks by having self-sufficient stores of food and water.
I hope this brain storming helps you in your project.

A hurricane assists in natural selection by killing the people stupid… sorry "stubborn"… enough to "rough it out." That’s a great positive effect if I’ve ever heard one.
