Volunteers are selected carefully and they usually go with people who are familiar with the culture/language of the area, have prior experience in disaster relief, and are knowledgeable in a relevant field (e.g. medicine). @ the person who suggested you buy a ticket to Haiti... what the hell? You think American Airlines is taking commercial planes to Haiti right now? Stay where you are. Don't even attempt to go, because it'll be a waste of time trying to figure out how to go there. No one will take you, and even if (let's say for argument's sake) you actually find a way to get there and go there, it'll probably lead to extra work for the volunteers there because now they have to save you as well (from crime, disease, etc.).
