I maintain 2 generators for power, a cupboard within my storm shelter with food to last 12 months for 8 to 12 people. An underground diesel tank with 600 gal capacity. Firearms and ammunition, cell phone and sat phone. Radios and medications. Plus a lot of other stuff for emergencies like 2 4 wheelers. Anyway, we live is an area prone to tornado’s and have used this shelter 3 times this year so far and with the approach of Hanna it appears we may use it yet again. I along with my neighbor have made this a joint effort four the past 8 years and it has worked fine so far. We live in an area that is not prone to flooding however. It has been a pretty high expense but during the storms I seem to forget about that. Also this shelter was not built for the use for storms alone. It is a multipurpose facility.

EVACUATE and deal with the mess afterward!!!! thats the BEST advice! you never know how bad its gonna get. my apt in ms flooded during katrina and i lost everything…i really believe that i would have died if i had stayed there (which i almost did) so i highly recommend evacuating!
