What evidencefrom rock layers could show a scientist that earthquakes occured before in an area before written records?

A change in the structure of the rock formations is the best evidence.
For example if you have what was obviously a lake bed (from the sedimentary rock layers) and there is an uplifting of one area, or a twisting or shearing of the rock, you can assume that a geological event caused it.
