We had an earthquake here back in 1989, it was huge, a lot of damage done, a few people perished. It was measured at 5.9 on the scale & went for about 15 seconds with smaller tremors afterwards.

Generally speaking, if the ground starts to crack thats a pretty good sign to move fast! And no, the ground does not "swallow you up" it is, as mentioned above, the earth moving. The plates under the ground’s surface shift, creating the earth to…quake

Dear friend I am doing research on earthquake from the past 5 years. That is from the day our country lost the life of 100,000 people. I have developed earthquake alarm that is affordable in cost & reliable in performance. I took some special care to eliminate false alarm. With the help of this quake alarm I have issued the warning 2 hours before Tsunami struck our Indian coast. They simply ignored my warning. Now they says that the reason for not telecasting my warning is just because the news came from a stranger they have not taken serious steps. Our Meteorological department failed to issue the warning even though they too sensed the earthquake the same time as I sensed it. The instrument I used to alert was designed by me in the year 2001. I went to pillar to post to get the approval. The seismologist refused to accept the concept. The cost of my quake alarm is just US$ 20 only. But I have not yet started selling it. There are some of these types of alarm available in USA and Canada. You can keep one in your house. This will warn you when it senses the primary waves. You can move to a safer place before heavy damage occurs. Please visit my slide show at URL

you can browse some internet site about the safe methods to be adopted during earthquake. If you send you mail I D I can send you the complete details. The difference of speed of non destructive primary wave to the slightly destructive secondary wave is about 8 Kilometer per second. Depending upon the distance of epicenter from your place you get the warning time. Say if you are 200 kilometers away from epicenter you will get 25 seconds warning time.
