Atheists in an earthquake, Christians in an earthquake…?
I was watching Larry King and he ‘interviewed’ a christian that was rescued from the Haiti earthquake, Larry asked the man what saved him and the christian man said ‘god’ saved me…this is very interesting, because I don’t remember seeing any pictures of god with a shovel working with the rescue teams, I would of thought the obvious answer would of been ‘the search and rescue teams saved me’.
Anyway, the question is, why do christians claim ‘god’ helps them when something ‘good’ happens after a catastrophe but that he is unable to intervene and actually stop the catastrophe from happening in the first place?
John H- please stop pulling percentages out of your ar$e. Rescue teams from Germany and England and China and many other countries, do not contain 90% theists.

Yes; I have seen that before. A missionary family was involved in a plane crash in Congo, where the plane plowed into a street market killing a couple of hundred people. They were on the plane and survived and said that God was looking out for them. Assholes.
John H: Thanks for confirming the idiocy and bigotry of an average fundie Christian. Pay mind now, this is not relativistic physics: main organizations doing work in Haiti (and elsewhere) are Medecins sans Frontieres and International Red Cross. Neither are religious. There may be religious people working for them, but the organizaitons are specifically secular. Oh, and then there’s UN and US troops, which are not run by religious organizations either. Of course, googling for secular/humanistic charities will return a huge list of organizations. You can sit down now and ponder how not to appear to be a fool next time you open your mouth. You are welcome.

Ask any Insurance Company; an earthquake is an Act of God…

Seems like a more plausible explanation than the Atheist claiming "oh random chance and coincidence saved me, praise Dawkins"

I think he was being very rude and ungrateful to the team of people who saved him by digging him out.Hope they leave him there next time.

But god also caused the earthquake so god still has a long way to go before he breaks even with the people of haiti.

GOD DOES SAVE BELIEVERS FROM BAD TIMES….EVERYONE ISNT getting God to listen when they refuse to repent. This isnt paradise here…that is the future

To the person above:
‘praise Dawkins’
? lOL?!
I hardly think that any atheist idolises biologist Richard Dawkins at a level of some divine deity. Heck, at least he is existant.

I thought it was a natural disaster.

There will always be pain and suffering until Jesus Himself comes back to earth. We live in a fallen world. It started in the Garden of Eden. Sin permeates the world we live in. Until Jesus returns to save His followers….there will be pain and suffering.
God uses people and circumstances to save people from death. We will die when He is ready…not until then (unless one chooses suicide). When our time is up…we either die of a heart attack, plane crash, or simply fall in the bathtub. Only God knows when our time is up. He wants to prolong the lives of nonbelievers to give them a chance to do the right thing and accept the FREE GIFT that Jesus Christ gave to all humans. That being that He died on the cross for ALL people who believe AND ACCEPT His free gift. If you disregard Jesus and ignore Him, you will end up in hell for eternity.

God uses people (and sometimes angels) to help rescue us. He works through people. God can intervene anytime He wants. Many times He chooses not to for the better good of mankind. His wisdom far far far exceeds ours.
It's just me :) on January 24, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Funny thing is, according to religion, being saved is an after death occurrence. If this "christian" was not dead and came back, then no one could be held responsible for saving him accept the search and rescue teams.

I would prefer to see the interview myself because you may have taken things out of context here.
A person could be wounded and trapped for several days for example. In those days that person would be feeling pain and as the days went on would be feeling hunger, as the body gets hungrier and weaker the moral of the person would be less and less and less. If an interviewer was asking ‘What’ saved you, isn’t it kind of curious as to why he asked ‘what’? It seems to me the interviewer was asking how the man didn’t give up on life when under such extreme conditions and the man replied that his belief in God kept him going until rescue workers were able to reach him.

Because they can’t comprehend humans have brains and help people out of the goodness of their hearts. They do everything for God, and think everything happens because of God.
If I were a rescue worker there I’d find it unfathomably offensive if I worked my butt off trying to dig someone out from debris and when they came out said ‘Oh, thank God. God saved my life.’ I’d say ‘Excuse me but f*ck you – I saved you, it was me holding the f*cking shovel – or would you like me to put you back in there and see if your God saves you this time?’
john H – 10 + 90 = 100. There is an equal percentage of atheists in the world and in Haiti. Learn basic mathematics, then come back. Or rather learn basic mathematics, then f*ck off.
To john H if he reads this – you can send me all the pathetic hate mail you want (not really, since I’ve blocked you); I meant the people helping in Haiti, not residents… and you say I’m the stupid one. Nice work.
*facepalm*

Maybe God’s hands are the hands holding the shovel. Is it possible?
Those people certainly aren’t doing that work for the big bucks, or the short hours, or the awesome snacks at break time. I suspect that a lot of them will admit they’re doing God’s work.

If "BIG IF" God did save him then you have to also accept that God squashed the other 200,000 people killed there like some kind of bugs.
Some god !

1) why do christians claim ‘god’ helps them when something ‘good’ happens after a catastrophe but that he is unable to intervene and actually stop the catastrophe from happening in the first place?
Christians do not believe this or claim this.

My brother is in Haiti at the moment helping out with the rescue effort – he’s a fire fighter. So … should I tell him to come home and just leave it all up to God or what?
Besides, if an earthquake is an act of God, then why did he create the earthquake in the first place, only to ‘save’ people again. Makes no sense to me.

It’s like all the actors who thank God when they win Oscars, but not curse Him when they lose.
If God saved him, then he also allowed people around him to die. I don’t understand.
Perhaps I’m not supposed to understand, OR……………

Yes, fuck all the dead, the widowed and the orphans. He’s an American, and we all know that’s god’s country, right?
Edit: Sorry, I just assumed that he was American because of the Larry King thing, though you didn’t specifically state it. Still, that’s ridiculously selfish thinking on his part.
People like this make me sick.
Pedestal 42 on January 24, 2010 at 2:13 pm
God rescues people, except for the ones he doesn’t who he merely "calls home" (or some such expression)
And when he kills most of a family and leaves one distraught survivor, that’s "mysterious ways" or "God has a higher purpose (or good) in mind."
You can’t easily argue with a mindset that is so flexible. *Whatever* happens God is good…

Believers are no more or less likely to die or be rescued in these situations than non-believers. Believers are no more or less likely to be holding the shovel, either. The obvious lack of correlation proves the total lack of divine intervention on both sides of the equation.
