Are the epicenter of earthquakes always on a fault line?

or can they be near a fault line, nowhere near fault line etc.

You should make sure you understand the difference between epicenter and hypocenter before asking this question. The epicenter of an earthquake is simply the surface location directly above the hypocenter where the actual earthquak site occurred. The hypocenter may not be directly on a fault but rather next to or near the fault line where cracks and other activities may occur. Earthquakes may also occur where there are other forms of stress on rock. If you can do a little digging, you can find the answer in wikipedia under hypocenter and epicenter.
