firstly don't be scared. how a building reacts in an earthquake depends on so many factors from how the building is constructed , to the type of soil/bedrock to the frequency and magnitude of earthquake waves themselves.

the most important thing to do is take control. get yourself an earthquake pack of a flashlight, batteries a whistle and (best of all) lots of candy. stash this lot under your bed and in the highly unliklely event of an earthquake get under the bed - the bed clothes and matress will prevent anything falling on you and wait until it is over or if need be get rescued. use the whistle and flashlight to get attention and the candy to keep you energised. maybe pack a book or two to stop you getting bored.

but most of all there's no need to worry. the chances of anything happening to you and your mom in an earthquake are so small as no to worry about

Depends on when and how your house was built. california has certain building codes for earthquake prone areas. So.... It depends on if your house was built after the codes.
